Cut Crops, Go Bowhunt!

Many corn and soybean fields will be cut this weekend and in the coming days. The days immediately after a farmer cuts those crops are awesome for hunting. The sudden change in habitat will force the deer to move around a lot, as they settle into new bed-to-feed patterns. The animals will seek out alternative food sources (acorns and browse) in nearby woods and thickets. Any bucks that bedded out in the stalks will transition to new bedding thickets. Hang a tree stand 100 to 200 yards off a freshly cut field, in a timbered draw or on an oak ridge and you will see lots of movement as deer sort things out. Even if you don’t kill a buck, [...]

Kansas: Kid Smokes Old 10-Pointer

Hey Mike, another good year on the home place property in Kansas for my son Zach. We skipped last year to focus on grades, and this season Zach and I gave the early muzzleloader hunt another shot. Less than 48 hours in the state and we were packing up to head home with another great buck for Zach! Hunting from the ground, Zach dropped the deer in its tracks at 160 yards with his Pro Hunter FX. The 3 Triple 7 pellets raised a bit of a welt on his forehand though! The buck dressed out at 203. Hunters Locked Out Of Federal Lands

Right now, with deer seasons heating up across the country, the federal government has issued directives to close accessible public lands while the government is shut down. At stake are millions of acres of public land administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, National Park Service and the like. According to the United States Sportsmen’s Alliance (USSA) these agencies are being told to close access to their lands because of the standoff taking place over funding the federal government. “These lands are generally accessible to the public without special entrance fees, passage through gates, or access via controlled roads or waterways,” said Nick Pinizzotto, USSA President and CEO. “Not only are these closures unnecessary, they run contrary to law.
