How many deer do coyotes really kill and eat? Amid the great action of a predator hunt in Montana, we take a scientific look at the coyote-whitetail dynamic as these crafty predators continue to expand their range and grow in numbers. Special thanks to Dr. Grant Woods, American’s top deer scientist, for helping out with this project and contributing his expertise.

LeifJohn- That’s awesome, congratulations! I just got my first coyote with a bow, a new ’59 Bear Recurve, 2 weeks ago too…can’t wait to see your new hat so be sure to share! Great show, Mike. Great perspectives and some interesting facts…I liked the facts on the collared elk in Western MT…what a mess they have over there after introducing in the Alaskan Grey Wolf. Good stuff. Weren’t those vapor trails cool in the show?
Great show last night Mike. Here in Nebraska we have an abundance of coyotes. Last year my uncle shot a buck with a bow and went back less than two hours later to retrieve it and it had been picked clean. He didn’t get 10lbs of meat off of it. I never pass up an opportunity to shoot at a coyote when the chance is there. I respect them and thier ways like you said, but they are a great animal to hunt as well.
I was bowhunting last weekend when I had a coyote come through trailing a doe and fawn. The doe was just hoofing it, mouth hanging open and panting. It was my first opportunity to take a coyote with a bow and it was a successful one! I brought it home, skinned it, and dropped it off at a local place that makes hats with them. Can’t wait to get my coyote fur hat back from my first bow-coyote!
Last week my buddy and I were looking at some habitat and food plots and found a fawn carcass from earlier in the spring/summer. I can only assume it was a ‘yote kill. And, to top that off, when I was leaving this same farm the other night (after hunting) I heard several of them sound off in the distance. Their howling is very primal and sends a shiver down my spine when I hear it. My fists clenched when I heard it. If you go to you tube you can find many instances of ‘yotes coming after pets, livestock, and even people.
And…last season I was packing my gear in my truck after an evening hunt and a fire siren went off in a nearby town. I mean to tell you I heard them in all directions. I was parked next to a standing cornfield and it sounded like they were all over that field. I got in the vehicle with the quickness. Those dang things are all over my city I live in. The neighbor saw one in my backyard this summer one night. Kind of crazy knowing how close they are.
