Our friend Wren sent these pictures of a great and unique buck shot in Texas last season. “The common base is just huge!” Wren said. What caused that one massive base? Had he lived, could the buck possibly shed this mass? I asked Kip Adams, wildlife biologist and Chief Conservation Officer for the National Deer Association. Kip says: Science has shown that you can move growing antler tissue to other parts of the body and grow an antler in a different place (other than a deer’s head). Research has done this on a deer’s leg and even a mouse’s forehead.  I’m guessing this buck was injured early in the antler growing process last year, and some of those antler cells [...]

On the plains of the Texas Panhandle last December, I packed in this unique little blind, plopped down the attached chair, sat down in it, organized my gear around me, pulled the camouflage fabric cover over my head, and was hunting a buck in minutes. The Ameristep Tent Chair has these advantages over standard and generally larger ground blinds: small, lightweight and easy to pack. since it’s one piece, no lugging both blind and chair(s) and having to make multiple trips to get all your gear into a hunt spot; you hike in with your rifle, pack and the Tent Chair on your shoulder (carry case included), find your spot and you’re ready to set up and hunt. you have [...]

When you leave a tree stand out in the woods overnight on public land, that stand becomes public domain and therefore anybody can use it. That might be the law in most states, but in the deer hunter’s code of conduct it’s a bunch of BS. Anybody who would hunt another man’s stand, public or private, without permission is a skunk. If it’s legal in your state and you decide to set a stand and leave it up for days, here are 3 things you can do to keep a squatter out: If you use a lock-on, remove the bottom ladder step and haul it out when you leave after a hunt. A bit of a hassle, but nobody can [...]

The Arkansas Department of Health urges hikers, campers, fishermen and all outdoorsman to protect themselves from diseases carried by ticks and mosquitos. Tick and mosquito bites can be prevented in similar ways: Use an EPA-approved insect repellant as directed. Use permethrin on your clothing as directed. Wear long sleeves and pants. Light-colored clothing makes it easier to spot ticks. Tuck your pants into socks or boots. Check for ticks on yourself, your children, and your pets regularly. Remove ticks quickly if one is found. To avoid ticks, walk in the middle of a hiking trail or path; avoid tall grass and leaf litter. To reduce mosquitoes around your home (or campsite), get rid of any standing water on the property. As Chronic Wasting Disease spreads in some regions across the country, state CWD rules and regulations are constantly changing. Keep these things in mind this season: When to Test Your Deer More than 315 counties in 24 states, from Wyoming to Mississippi to upstate New York (new on the list this year) have reported CWD in free-ranging deer. Has the disease been detected near where you hunt? An excellent resource is the CWD map at cwd-info.org which lists all counties in all states where CWD has been confirmed. Check the map, and if you hunt in or near any region that has CWD you should have any deer you shoot tested. Each state’s hunting website has specific (if perhaps confusing) [...]
