How to Choose a Deer Taxidermist

Right now, a lot of hunters are getting their 2013 bucks back from the taxidermist. From the pictures of the shoulder mounts I have seen, most of the work has been good, but a few of the bucks have been average at best. Since you’ll pay $500 and up to mount that big 10-pointer you’ll kill this fall (think positive) you’ll want the taxidermy work to be in the good to excellent category. Long-time BIG DEER blogger and great hunter Matt “Flatlander” Cheever says that now is the time to lay the groundwork and find a taxidermy shop. Flat sent us this list of things to look for 4 years ago, and it’s still great, solid advice: Start looking around [...]

Spring Scout For Big Bucks

Do any of you walk the woods and scout for old buck sign this time of year? I know it's not a sexy topic, but if you go out and do it a few days this spring, your whitetail hunting will improve three-fold 6 months from now. A study of wild, hunted deer in Louisiana found that the average core area of mature bucks in the fall and winter months is only about 300 acres. Much smaller than you probably imagined. If food and cover remain the same, [...]

Traditional bowhunting legend Barry Wensel injured his arm a few years ago, and now he hunts often out of ladder stands that he can more easily climb with one hand. He hides those big platforms with artificial leaves and ferns that he buys at a craft store.  “You know, the brown, gold and green plastic or nylon ones with the wire stems,” he says. Barry weaves the fake foliage around the uprights of the ladder; threads the leaves and ferns down, around and through the seat and foot grill; and then ties or tapes them solidly in place. “When the real leaves fall later on in October and November, my ladders stay hidden and deer are used to seeing them,” [...]

Thanking Rand Paul

2020-06-10T09:23:04-04:00March 3rd, 2014|BigDeer, Deer Hunting, Hunting News|4 Comments

We all need to stand up and thank Sen. Rand Paul (R-Kentucky) for putting a hold on Dr. Vivek Murthy, President Obama’s pick for Surgeon General of the United States. A hold is a parliamentary procedure that allows a Senator to prevent a motion (Murthy’s nomination) from reaching a vote on the Senate floor. As this article points out, Paul wrote in a letter to Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nevada): “Historically, the Surgeon General of the United States has been a position with the purpose of educating Americans so that they may lead healthier lives, rather than advancing a political agenda.” Murthy’s agenda? Very anti-gun. Wrote Sen. Paul: “The primary policy goals of Dr. Murthy’s organization (Doctors for America) have been [...]
