5 Ways To Find More Shed Antlers

Patience: I know you’re itching to get out there, but don’t go too early. If you spook a 150-class buck with loose, wobbly antlers, he might run a quarter-mile and drop one or both sides in a remote spot where you can’t find them, or across a fence where you don’t have permission to go. A good rule of thumb is to start looking in mid-January, and really crank it up around Super Bowl Sunday, when most bucks have dropped the bone. Watch winter feeding areas where deer congregate (corn, soybeans, hay lots, etc.) every few days until you see few if any bucks with antlers. Then start looking. A good option is to set a couple of trail cameras [...]

More Trail Camera Bucks 2015

Hi Mike: Two weeks ago I set up a camera in a slightly different area and got this buck. He has some sort of an abscess, or growth, below his right cheek. I'm going to try and get him on the opener of bow, but we'll see how that plays out. I'm going to use my cameras to see if I can pinpoint his bedding area during Sept. As you know it's a delicate balancing act with a buck of this caliber. I believe him to be 5 now.--Anonymous Hey Mike: This is a buck we call “Legend.” We began chasing him after I found his shed lying in his bed in late January. I have never seen him on [...]

From our friend and longtime blogger Scott from Michigan: Hi Mike: Only the end of June and this guy is looking pretty nice. Great brow tines, one starting to split, and thinking he could pop a couple G4’s yet. Hopefully he sticks around as these are the first trail cam pics of the year for me. Will check again in a couple weeks. From our friend John in PA: I made a trip up and back to the Allegheny National Forest yesterday to check cameras. No big deer but, here’s a pic of the 30 sheds I found on a few trips up there this spring. Some pretty nice [...]

Montana: Saga of the Mutt Buck

2020-06-10T09:19:37-04:00May 20th, 2015|Big Deer TV, BigDeer, Shed Hunting|4 Comments

I used to hunt out on the Milk River every fall with my buddy Luke Strommen, before the epic EHD outbreak of 2011 wiped out the whitetail herd, which is still struggling to recover. For several years in the early 2000s, as soon as I rolled into camp, Luke would start chattering about this one special buck that roamed the river around Vandalia. "Saw the Mutt Buck the other day…guy missed the Mutt Buck two days ago…the Mutt Buck is cool…maybe you’ll get a shot at the Mutt Buck…" Well, I never saw the Mutt Buck (and curiously I never knew how he got his name) and had forgotten all about him, until I ran across this story that Luke sent [...]
