South Dakota Sioux Falls Buck: Alive at 11.5!

In October 2008 I first blogged about a giant whitetail (12x14 with 240” of rack) that was living in the city limits of East Sioux Falls. Somebody posted a you tube video of him (I don’t see it online now) and it caused mild hysteria amongst hunters and non-hunters alike. At the time people figured the buck was the walking state record. For the last 5-plus years I’ve tracked this amazing deer with the help of Kelly, a hard-core hunter and shedder in the area. Kelly wrote me awhile back with this update: Mike, I'm running out of room! You should remember the buck mounted on the wall, that’s “you-tube" from east of Sioux Falls. Last year, just before scheduled shedding [...]

Deer Shed: Longest Tines Ever?

2020-06-10T09:23:34-04:00June 27th, 2013|BigDeer, Deer Science, Shed Hunting|2 Comments

Thanks to extreme antler collector Mike Charowhas for sharing: Mike, how often do you see an official 18-inch G2 and a 15 5/8-inch G3? Dave Boland scored it. Found north of Kansas City, MO right on the KS/MO border. Four points and scores 87 5/8. Just to give an idea how long that G2 is, consider that the non-typical point sticking off the G2 is 4 inches long! Thanks, Mike Two observations: that has to be one of the longest G2 tines ever officially measured on a whitetail; if the other side of that rack scores similarly, and give the buck a 16-inch spread, you’re looking at a 190-inch 8-point! Wow!

“Titanic” 8-Point Buck Scored 154!

Today’s post from blogger Jon, who hunts up in Minnesota/Wisconsin: Mike: I have any update from a post last year. I sent you the velvet picture of Titanic last August, and we had a lot of people guess at the score. Well, in early November 2012 I had a great encounter with this buck. I was sitting a cut corn field with a buck decoy out when the bruiser came in chasing does at last light. I didn’t know it was Titanic, but I knew it was one of the 3 big shooters we had on camera. He locked up at 35 yards, but was facing directly at me, staring at the decoy. I waited at full draw for what [...]

Virginia: Monster Rack Pickup

2020-06-10T09:23:36-04:00May 22nd, 2013|BigDeer, Shed Hunting|7 Comments

The Virginia Whitetails' Facebook page posted this rack/skull that was picked up near Culpepper/Rixeyville (Culpepper Co.), about 30 miles from where I was born and raised and still live. Hard to say what killed this deer. We didn’t have a big EHD outbreak that I know of last year, but the rack does look like it might have scraps of velvet still attached. More likely it was hit by a car, as this is a fairly well populated area. VA is growing some big bucks, maybe I ought to stay closer to home to hunt and film. BTW, that rack has the look of a big one that comes from VA: wide, not the longest tines and a touch gnarly.

Big Deer Shed: What Does It Score?

2020-06-10T09:23:36-04:00May 14th, 2013|BigDeer, Shed Hunting|36 Comments

My buddy Brandon and his better half, Amanda, found this 6-point shed up in the Saskatchewan bush the other day. What do you think it scores? Take your time, rough it out and reply below. I'll catch up with Brandon a little later (he's bear hunting now) and get the score. I'll take the closest guesses, pick one, and send a Cabela's hat to the winner! BTW, very typical look for a mature antler from up there in the forest fringe habitat: thick with moderate tine length. Love that chocolate coloration.
