How To Protect Your Tree Stands

When you leave a tree stand out in the woods overnight on public land, that stand becomes public domain and therefore anybody can use it. That might be the law in most states, but in the deer hunter’s code of conduct it’s a bunch of BS. Anybody who would hunt another man’s stand, public or private, without permission is a skunk. If it’s legal in your state and you decide to set a stand and leave it up for days, here are 3 things you can do to keep a squatter out: If you use a lock-on, remove the bottom ladder step and haul it out when you leave after a hunt. A bit of a hassle, but nobody can [...]

How To Hunt A Whitetail Buck On 40 Acres

Mike: I hunt on 80 private acres, 40 of which are on the west side of a road and the other 40 on the east side. When I sit in a stand on the west side all I see are does, no matter the time, food source or wind direction. When I hunt any of my stands on the east side all I see are small bucks. Not just one or two, but like 5 or 6, with the biggest one maybe a 6-pointer. There is sign of bigger bucks in the area, and locals have seen some big deer on both sides of the road. So where should I hunt? Wait it out on the east where all the small [...]

How Important Are Acorns For Deer?

Pennsylvania biologist Jeannine Fleegle notes that while the list of foods for whitetails is long and varied and includes crops, browse, forbs, grasses, fungi and mast, “It is no secret that acorns are a favorite on the list. If they are available, acorns dominate their diet in fall and winter.” Fleegle points to experiments that show when acorns are available, whitetails eat about 1.5 pounds of nuts daily per hundred pounds of body weight. “Deer can sustain a maximum of 30% weight loss during (the rut and into) winter,” she says. “More than that and they die of malnutrition.” It’s easy to see why acorns are so important not only to the deer, but to your hunt strategy. This summer, walk [...]

Why One Man Hunts

Today’s fantastic guest post is from a bowhunter named Kyle Wright. I don’t know Kyle, but from his writing I take he’s a fairly young man and I know he is a thinking and appreciative hunter. Love your attitude, man.—M.H. Just saw on your site an article entitled 'Why Do You Hunt?' and thought I'd submit my answer to that question. Thanks for reading, Kyle Wright There is a plot of common ground on every acre of sacred ground we hunt, a common thread woven through every stitch of camouflage in our closets. We come from all walks of life but those walks are all taken in the same pair of broken-in boots. So, unsolicited, I made the decision after wrapping [...]

How Hot Weather Affects Deer Hunting

Fact: It is warmer where most of us hunt than it was a decade ago. And while it was always warm in many places in September and October, it can now be downright hot during those first weeks of bow season. It’s not unusual for warm weather to extend into November or even December. During a muzzleloader hunt here in Virginia last year, it was the warmest November in 25 years! By all accounts this pattern will continue, and so it is more important than ever to factor warm weather into your game plan. Dave Moreland is an avid hunter and a biologist who worked for the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, serving many years as the state’s Deer [...]
