Social media causes some good and a lot of bad in the hunting world; this might be one of the good things. Chris Cook, Alabama’s Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries (WFF) Division’s Deer Program Coordinator, said the number of big bucks taken by Alabama hunters has increased in the past few years because of a variety of factors. “I think people have just gotten into the habit of not shooting every buck they see,” he said. “Some of that may be the three-buck limit. I think it may be a change in attitude for a lot of hunters. For social media, it’s all about antler size. They may not shoot the small bucks they see. It’s definitely changed deer hunting, for [...]

A new study published in Current Biology estimated that some 36,500 deer deaths, 33 human deaths and 2,000 human injuries could be prevented annually by halting the switch from daylight saving to standard time in autumn and during the deer rut. USA Today reports that researchers analyzed more than 1 million deer collisions and 96 million hourly traffic observations, and found that deer collisions are 14 times more frequent in the two hours after sunset than before sunset, according to the study. When peak traffic volumes shift to after sunset following the transition from daylight saving to standard time, there is a 16% spike in collisions the week following, the study says. Delaying the sunset could also save the country $1.19 billion [...]

From our texts back and forth from tree stands each season for the last 10 years, Mark Drury and I keep honing our theory: Mature bucks move best in daylight hours in and around a full moon that shines the sky in November. We know this flies in the face of what Granddaddy told you: Bucks move all night on the big moon, it’s the worst time to hunt! But I know we’re on to something. The more I hunt a full moon in early to mid-November across the U.S. and Canada, the more mature bucks I see wandering around glassy-eyed from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Drury agrees, and you’ve seen all the rutting giants he kills on his [...]

The Tyler County Sheriff's Office got a 911 call from a bowhunter stuck upside down and 18 feet up in a climbing tree stand. "He was high off the ground, with his right foot wedged in the framework of his climbing stand," said responding deputy Deputy LeBlanc. First responders were able to maneuver a truck below the hanging hunter, climb up, unlock his foot and rescue the unnamed man, who miraculously did not need treatment. “My advice to hunters is that this is a prime example of the need to use a safety harness,” said the deputy. “He's lucky his phone didn't (fall and) hit the ground. He'd been hanging long enough that his fluids and blood were rushing to [...]

When November 10 rolls around in most states, you can pretty much throw your best-laid schemes out the window. Who knows when and where a muscle-bound, gnarly-racked buck drunk on testosterone is apt to show up dogging a doe in daylight hours? Throw in the hunting pressure you’ll likely have to deal with, and any grand big-buck plan you have will go south in a hurry. Here’s my theory. Instead of trying to implement a big, complex, tightly woven strategy, we ought to focus more on small, quick-strike tactics, like the 33 gems found here. 1) Don’t tell Joe down at the gun shop where you just saw a 10-pointer running a doe. And for heaven’s sake, don’t let him [...]
