A guy emailed me this picture and asked: Hanback, would you shoot this buck?
I love weird racks, but I don’t know.
This looks to be a young buck. If you are managing a property, you would definitely classify it as a “cull” buck, as you don’t want him passing on those genetics.
And he has a little drop tine!
But I don’t think I’d shoot him…it would be interesting to see what the rack looks like in a year or two.
Would you shoot him or pass?
Shoot, Shoot, Shoot, that deer is a once in a life time opportunity. I believe that deer is at least 3 1/2 years old but I wouldn’t care if it was 6 months old. Very unique. Love to have it on the wall.
Yeah I’d take him. Pretty cool looking buck
you can’t “control” genetics on non- fence ground but you can definitely impact it signifcantly. look at the success stories in many states and letting deer grow up and also taking some bucks out, I agree CULL BUCK is grossly mis-used but in reality it can be utilized but rarely so. I would deem this as a cull buck and I would shoot him late in the season but not if I only had one tag and it were during the rut.
I love funky and different looking whitetail racks! I’d pass and see how he turns out in another year or two..you never know he could be the next Medusa buck. If you haven’t seen the buck I’m referring to here is a link: http://www.northamericanwhitetail.com/2010/09/22/trophybucks_naw_medusa_1109/
i think the buck is 3.5 years +. look at the difference in the chest and head with the other buck….
i also don’t think you can control genetics in the wild. too many variables.
the buck could be older, hard to tell with these freaks sometime; I shot a similar buck on TV last year in IL that I swear was 4.5, but know at least 3.5, but he had more mass. as for genetics there are variables yes, but whitetails live in relatively small areas, and by culling a buck like this you undoubtedly take some of those genes out of the area….but heck, I love deer like this freaks of nature!
He’s unique!! Take him…
Absolutely. Plus, I don’t think he’s that young.
I shot one that (amazingly enough) could have been his twin – ok maybe his brother. I had previously passed the deer, but realized he was a bully to other deer. After I shot him (at 8 yards with a recurve), I figured him at 4.5 yrs. old. I was glad I did.
A cull buck is complete fiction. You can not control genetics in a wild setting. I am amazed that some people still believe this. When you do your research, make sure you look at the newest data and avoid the high fence data, wild deer genetics are much different than farm animals.
Would love to see what he looks like in a few years. But, I think I’d have to get them genes out of the pool. Although, I have read a few articles recently that suggest that these screwed up racks have more to do with poor minerals in the diet than they do with bad genetics. I’m no biologist, and don’t believe everything I read, so I would probably have to take him out.
Oh, yeah. Get him off your property plus he’s just neat.
i’m drawing back and letting it fly! what a conversation piece to be hanging on the wall in the hunting lodge! one of a kind.
Dead as a stump!
