Responding to a complaint of a suspicious vehicle in a public recreation area in Nebraska in February, officers encountered two suspected illegal immigrants carrying a dead and very bloody bald eagle. The men spoke no English and carried no identification other than documents from the Honduran consulate.

Communicating with the two suspects via a translation app on their phones, the officers learned that the Hondurans planned to cook and eat the eagle for dinner. How they were able to obtain the scoped air rifle they killed the bird with is unclear. The men were charged with unlawful possession of a bald eagle and not having a driver’s license.

Stanton County sheriff Mike Unger pointed out that police officers are not permitted to inquire about a suspect’s immigration status.

Killing a bald eagle is a violation of the 1940 Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, a federal law that carries a punishment of up to one year in prison and a fine of up to $100,000. While local officers can arrest people suspected of killing an eagle, federal authorities must bring those charges. Sheriff Unger says he’s repeatedly reached out to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service but has no gotten a reply. “I’m very frustrated with the federal government.” the sheriff said.

You and I would never kill a bald eagle, but if we did, the Feds would throw the book at us. We would deserve it! We’d likely be fined $10,000 to $20,000 and possibly spend some time in jail for a first offense.

Does it surprise me that the Feds will not bring charges against these suspected illegals, for killing an eagle and committing the crime with a firearm? No. Does it infuriate me? Hell yes! The bald eagle is our national symbol for God’s sake! To have the majestic bird slaughtered by suspected illegals is the ultimate disgrace and irony.

What is America coming to? More than five million illegal migrants have crossed the southern border since Joe Biden took office.
