Today’s blog from Kelly “Sheddhunter” Kirsch, who has posted many great antler-hunting stories and tips on BIG DEER. Look forward to more of Kelly's reports  as shed season heats up next spring: Mike: Here's a of picture of the deer I shot, West River South Dakota. It was a very tough year, with an EHD outbreak again in central SD…not good. Hunted a total of 7 hard days and this is the best deer I spotted during legal shooting hours. Did a half-mile crawl to get a 55-yard shot.--Sheddhunter

I have been on the road for weeks hunting and filming for the new 2017 season of BIG DEER TV. While I was out, I have received many great hunting stories and pictures from hunters across the country, and I will be posting every one over the next weeks. Send me your buck story and pictures and I'll add it to the lineup. First up, a well-written story from Nicholas that pretty much epitomizes all that is good and real in deer hunting: Mike: My journey for a Nebraska public-land buck started back in 2012 when I was notified I was getting stationed at Offutt Air Force Base, which is located about 15 miles south of Omaha. I am a [...]

2020-06-10T09:16:32-04:00December 9th, 2016|Big Deer Stories, Big Deer TV, BigDeer, Deer Hunting|4 Comments

My great friend Grant Kuypers of Buck Paradise Outfitters, who you have seen me hunt with many times on TV, had an unreal season in 2016. Grant wrote: One morning in October: I don't get to hunt much with the business but was lucky enough to have some time after the ag harvest and before whitetail season. What a great morning it turned out to be! Left the house to head to the farm with a mule deer tag I had drawn in my pocket. Took the long route to get there and came upon this awesome heavy old muley. Love hunting with my muzzleloader! One day in November: I had a few hours off and went out at 3 [...]

Guest post from Big Daddy, who has stuck with me on the blog since I launched in 2008. This is one of the coolest posts I can remember, and one of the most satisfying for me:   Mike: Once again early November proved to be a big buck's downfall. I posted on your rattling tips blog the other day about working on this buck with the horns: Big Daddy on November 7, 2016 at 10:59 am said: "I have been hunting hard for one certain buck since October 12th except for a few days I took off to hunt mule deer in Montana the third week of October. I have seen him twice with no shot either time. Today, Nov. [...]

Big Deer Year 2016: Comeback of Pike Country Illinois

2020-06-10T09:16:32-04:00December 5th, 2016|Big Deer Stories, Big Deer TV, BigDeer, Deer Hunting|1 Comment

In my preseason posts on BIG DEER I predicted that 2016 would be the best rack year we’ve seen since 2010 across America. That turned out not only to be true but an understatement, as gigantic bucks have been killed from Virginia to Indiana to Kansas to Wisconsin and all places in and around and in between. A part of the buck boom has been the comeback of Pike County. "We took in more big deer this October than any year I can remember," says award-winning taxidermist Todd Smith. That is quite a statement from someone who has had a taxidermy business based out of Pittsfield, Illinois, in the heart of Pike County, for more than 25 years. "The bucks [...]
