From the Midwest Buck Quest Facebook Page: 109 inches, found in Southern Illinois. Wow!!! The 2 extra beams are obviously cool and unique, but check out the antler base. Big around as a pop can! I’ve seen mass like that come out of southern Illinois before.

Hide Your Stand With Fake Leaves

Traditional bowhunting legend Barry Wensel injured his arm a few years ago, and now he hunts often out of ladder stands that he can more easily climb with one hand. He hides those big platforms with artificial leaves and ferns that he buys at a craft store.  “You know, the brown, gold and green plastic or nylon ones with the wire stems,” he says. Barry weaves the fake foliage around the uprights of the ladder; threads the leaves and ferns down, around and through the seat and foot grill; and then ties or tapes them solidly in place. “When the real leaves fall later on in October and November, my ladders stay hidden and deer are used to seeing them,” [...]

Kansas Deer Sheds!

2020-06-10T09:23:03-04:00March 18th, 2014|BigDeer, Shed Hunting|4 Comments

Tony and his dog recently found this truck full of sheds on a ranch I hope to hunt this fall (got to pull a buck tag first though, I did not draw in 2013).  The 5-point antlers on the bed in the middle are off the biggest deer, but if I could choose one buck to get a shot at in December it would be the one who lost that thick shed w/the split brow and G-2 on the right. Love those massive Kansas character racks. He is and old deer and gonna be even older this year. I would shoot the middle buck too, though, wouldn’t you? I sure hope I draw a tag.

New York: Lump-Face Deer

Hi Mike: I was told that you may be able to help identify the problem with this doe who keeps hanging around our apartment complex. She is very tiny, but there is obviously something wrong with her face - she has large lumps up and down her nose up to her eyes. I've attached a photo. We've named her Crystal as she made it through the harsh winter - we're in the Finger Lakes Region of central New York. She will come right up to us and seems very curious about people. She will sit and stare at us while we are outside. She comes within about two feet of me whenever I head outdoors. The local herd of deer [...]

Shed Hunting: Are Skulls With Antlers Legal?

2020-06-10T09:23:03-04:00March 13th, 2014|BigDeer, Hunting News, Shed Hunting|10 Comments

While you’re roaming the woods for sheds this weekend, you might run across a skull with antlers attached (from a buck that died of EHD, was hit by a car, or was lost by a hunter in the last season or two). These skulls are cool finds, but did you know that in a few states, like Kansas and Illinois, possession of a skull with antlers attached requires a salvage tag from the state? With a skull and antlers that are obviously months-old and dried out or even bleached, this does not make sense to me, but if it’s the law you need to know it. The last thing you want is to come back home with a skull with [...]
