NC: “Lancetfish” Washes on Beach

Just in time to freak out the Memorial Day crowds that pack onto the beaches at Nags Head, heart of  the barrier island where I have vacationed many times, comes this story from WABF. A surfer dude found this weird fish that had washed ashore, and he photographed it. Because of its appearance and its long and very high dorsal fin biologists…believe the fish is a lancetfish... Lancetfish have large mouths and sharp teeth and are typically known to be deepwater fish… Very little is known about the lancetfish's biology… This we do know. With its eel-like body and piranha head and teeth, that is one strange- looking critter. Photo: Leif Rasmussen

Facts About Deer Fawns

Reports are coming in that the first fawns are dropping. Some factoids about these beautiful little animals: --A whitetail fawn weighs 4 to 8 pounds at birth, and its weight double in 2 weeks. --Each fawn has a unique smell that its mama doe recognizes. --A fawn spends its first month in hiding, separate from the doe; but the doe comes around 2 to 4 times a day so the fawn can nurse. --A healthy fawn can outrun you when it’s only a few days old. --A fawn has about 300 white spots. --25% of twin fawns have different fathers.

Should it be a Felony to Hunt Deer Without Permission?

2020-06-10T09:22:50-04:00May 16th, 2014|BigDeer, Hunting News|7 Comments

From the US Sportsmen’s Alliance: A bill being considered in the Rhode Island legislature would make hunting for deer on private land without permission a felony level offense. …House Bill 7858 would also require jail time (up to two years) for anyone who hunts deer on private land without written permission. The state’s Department of Environmental Management and Rhode Island sportsmen’s clubs have testified against the bill as being “unnecessary and excessively punitive.” I agree. While I hate those who knowingly trespass and poach as much as anybody this bill has the potential for trouble. You know how difficult it can be to determine exact property lines in the woods. Some (most) are not clearly marked and/or posted. Suppose you [...]

Should Pen-Raised Bucks Be Let into the Wild?

2020-06-10T09:22:50-04:00May 14th, 2014|BigDeer, Deer Management|10 Comments

This is one of 33 interesting deer-research findings in this QMDA article: $115,000: The estimated cost to produce a 1-inch increase in average Boone & Crockett score among a localized population of free-ranging bucks by releasing pen-raised deer to improve genetics. Dr. Steve Demarais of Mississippi State University conducted the computer-model study (using existing data on natural dispersal and immigration, breeding success, recruitment, and survival, plus the costs of buying pen-raised deer) in response to recent suggestions by deer breeders that this practice would be beneficial. Most biologists laughed at the idea, but they had little data to stand on. Now they do. That ridiculous amount of money aside, the idea of releasing tame bucks into the woods is preposterous. What [...]
