Minnesota Bow Buck, 156″

Today’s very well written guest blog comes from long-time Big Deer Blogger Clint up in Minnesota: The 2013 season was a tough one for me. Not tough in regards to harvesting deer, but my schedule didn’t allow for me to get in the woods near as much as I would have liked. I was very fortunate to take a nice doe during my first sit of the season on September 15. Between that day and November 6 I was only able to hunt four more times. One of those times being an awesome hunting trip to Wisconsin with the rest of the Suburban Standout Outdoors pro staff team. However back in Minnesota, I found myself hunting a cold and rainy [...]

Saw this Tweet from Deer Hunting Addict: Johnny Football scored a Big Buck! And not a football contract...#AntlersAnonymous I always liked Johnny and I like him better now. And I think he’s gonna make it big time in the NFL…another Fran Tarkenton?

Q&A: Head Shot On Deer?

2020-06-10T09:23:05-04:00January 14th, 2014|BigDeer|2 Comments

Mike: I hunted 30 days last year and saw one shooter that I figured would go in the low 150s. That’s a heck of a buck where I hunt. He was standing in a thicket and all I could see was his head and rack. Not much neck. I planted my scope behind his ear and clicked off the safety. He was about 100 yards away and I had a good rest. But I couldn’t do it. Now I’m second-guessing because I’ll probably never see a buck that big again around here. Should I have pulled the trigger? Doug, AL Doug: Hell no, you did good! I cannot think of single instance when you should shoot a buck or a [...]

Indiana Giant Bow Buck!

2020-06-10T09:23:05-04:00January 13th, 2014|Big Deer Stories, BigDeer|3 Comments

Today’s guest blog from Indiana hunter Nathan Spalding: Mike: I've only been hunting for 5 years now, but I hunt hard. I've spent the last 5 years making plenty of mistakes and learning from them. I don't hunt with guns; I love the challenge that bow hunting offers. I feel very blessed to have taken this buck with a bow. The ground he was killed on is in Gibson County, in the river bottoms. I've had good luck in the past at this spot. I had made some mock scrapes (check out this Big Deer Tactics video on buck scrapes) on a Thursday night and hunted them Friday. I had 7 bucks hit them. I almost drew on one of [...]

Quick and Easy European Skull Mount

2020-06-10T09:23:05-04:00January 10th, 2014|BigDeer|8 Comments

Shot a great Texas buck yesterday. We put the skinned skull in the pot and boiled it for 10 hours (note the water line in the pot, you have to add water every couple of hours). Then we removed the skull and used a power washer to blow away all the loose meat from the skull, eye sockets and face bones (took maybe 45 seconds). Presto, look at the skull mount in the picture below. You can bleach the skull later if you want too, but I usually just leave it like this (below picture). I prefer my skulls rough with character, with no wood plaque. This poor man’s Euro looks great leaning on a desk or table, or in [...]
