Kansas: Kid Smokes Old 10-Pointer

Hey Mike, another good year on the home place property in Kansas for my son Zach. We skipped last year to focus on grades, and this season Zach and I gave the early muzzleloader hunt another shot. Less than 48 hours in the state and we were packing up to head home with another great buck for Zach! Hunting from the ground, Zach dropped the deer in its tracks at 160 yards with his Pro Hunter FX.  The 3 Triple 7 pellets raised a bit of a welt on his forehand though! The buck dressed out at 203. Zach is 14 now and I told him it's time to switch full time to the bow or he'd have more mounts by [...]

MONSTER ALERT! This is my dream buck, the drop tine is one thing but check out that club! Joe at America’s Best Bowstrings says that a friend of theirs, Buck Owen, shot the giant that he’s been hunting for a couple years. It's supposed to an amazing story of hard work, dedication and perseverance for this free-range monster. We have reached out to Buck, and hope to tell his story soon.

Wisconsin Giant Non-Typical Buck!

2020-06-10T09:23:21-04:00September 25th, 2013|Big Deer Stories, BigDeer|1 Comment

This is the first true monster of the 2013 season, shot last week in southeastern Wisconsin. Photos of the incredible buck were first posted on the Whale-Tales Archery  website. Word is the rack rough-scored 244” and could be the new state archery record. That’s all we know for now. Funny, I was up in that part of the world in July, talking with and filming Wisconsin bowhunters for an episode of BIG DEER TV to air this October. I remember standing with the current No. 1 non-typical bow buck--Wayne Schumacher’s 243 6/8” monster—and saying into the camera, “This is some of the best big buck country in America…Wayne’s record could stand for another 10 years, or it could fall this [...]

Coyote Calf Kill

2020-06-10T09:23:21-04:00September 24th, 2013|Big Deer Stories, Big Deer TV, BigDeer|4 Comments

Later this fall on Big Deer TV we’re airing a show on the extent and effects of coyote predation on whitetail deer across America. We filmed parts of the show out in Montana last winter with our good friend Luke Strommen, who showed us this picture and told us about this coyote encounter on his family’s ranch some years ago: We’ve had a lot of experience with coyotes out here, both with our deer and our livestock. This was the picture I was telling you about. The cow that had this calf started calving late in the day below Dad's house. She was away from the rest of the herd. Dad had been having problems with coyotes during calving season, [...]

Big Buck on Trail Camera

2020-06-10T09:23:21-04:00September 23rd, 2013|Big Deer Stories, BigDeer, Deer Management|1 Comment

Hi Mike, this has been a weird summer with minimal big-buck photo ops. I know they're out there, but getting them on camera has been a chore. Today I went and retrieved my camera that had been set back on Labor Day weekend. This buck I call Fred showed up in the early part of the month in full velvet, and then showed off and on again the rest of the month up until today. Last year he was a 5X4 with main beams that swept upward and gave his rack that “rib cage” look that I think is so neat. I never saw him all last hunting season, so I know he's a survivor. This year...well, see for yourself. He [...]
