Review: Cabela’s Instinct Rubber Boots

I’m not a big fan of rubber boots--I’d rather wear lighter and less bulky leather ones and spray them with Scent Killer—but a week ago I hunted Anticosti Island in northern Quebec, where the ground cover is more than 70% peat and bogs. If you don’t wear rubbers in that watery habitat, you just can’t go. Each day I slogged a minimum of 8 miles through boot-sucking bogs, and splashed across omnipresent streams and beaver ponds. I was pleasantly surprised with the Instinct Whitetail Rubber Boots I wore. They were comfortable and easy to walk in. Not bulky and clumsy like other rubber boots I’ve worn in the past. Favorite feature: The breathable, water-repellent and quiet fabric uppers, which look good in Outfitter camo. [...]

Hunt The October “Mini Rut”

2020-06-10T09:17:02-04:00October 12th, 2015|Big Deer TV, Bowhunting, Deer Science|Comments Off on Hunt The October “Mini Rut”

Mike: I've read about an October “mini rut,” and I'm a believer. I've always had good luck seeing bucks on either side of Oct 15. A few years ago on October 11th, bucks were chasing everything that came into a field. A nice 3-year-old got in on the action. He actually did a lip curl for several minutes where one of the does had stopped to pee. Later, a second buck came along, trailing that same doe's path and stopping at the same spot for several minutes before continuing on the scent trail. Makes one wonder if maybe a few does do cycle a month early. Are you aware of any proof of this? Bob from WI Bob: Yes, every scientific rut chart/bar graph you’ll see will show that some [...]

BIG DEER Moon & Rut Hunting Guide 2015

2020-06-10T09:17:03-04:00September 18th, 2015|Big Deer TV, Deer Hunting, Deer Management, Deer Science|3 Comments

From Kansas to Virginia to Canada, 95 percent of adult does will come into estrous and be bred from roughly November 5-20, regardless of moon phase, or weather for that matter. That is the case every year. So take off anytime from Halloween though Thanksgiving, and you’ll hunt deer in some throes of the rut. And anytime you hunt rutting deer you have the potential to shoot a good buck. But I do believe that some days and weeks are better than others to take your hunt vacation according to the various phases of the “rutting moon” in late October and November. A lot of people are moon skeptics, but not me. There are a lot of variables to moon phase [...]

Big-Buck Dreams Come True In South Carolina

2020-06-10T09:17:03-04:00September 16th, 2015|Big Deer TV, BigDeer|4 Comments

Let me introduce you to my new hunting buddy, 15-year-old Jordan Beri. Last Friday evening Jordan, who has spina bifida and is paralyzed from the chest down, shot this 212-pound, low-fence giant in SC. Jordan dropped the fully mature deer w/one shot. I have never been so proud. I was at least 10 times more excited than he was! Before our afternoon hunt, we held hands and Jordan led us in a little prayer. He’s been a preacher since age 4 and has traveled around the South preaching at revivals. His dad, Patrick, told me that often at these events other preachers come up to Jordan and say, “Boy, let’s pray that one day you’ll walk again.” To which Jordan replies, “You [...]

Oklahoma Big Buck: 227 6/8″

2020-06-10T09:17:03-04:00September 14th, 2015|Big Deer Stories, Big Deer TV|1 Comment

Gary Fears watched our BIG DEER TV episode shot in western Oklahoma and sent me this: Hey Mike, I shot this 227 6/8-inch bruiser in November 2010 not far from where you hunt in northwest Oklahoma. I watch your show and am glad you show just how good the deer hunting is here in Oklahoma. I took this buck the day before Thanksgiving 2010. We had a late rut that year and he was chasing a hot doe. He ran off a very respectable 10 point, but stayed back in some cedars for probably 15 minutes or more. He never got closer than 225 yards so I took the shot and put him down.  I didn’t realize he was as big as he [...]
