Big Buck on Trail Camera

Hi Mike, this has been a weird summer with minimal big-buck photo ops. I know they're out there, but getting them on camera has been a chore. Today I went and retrieved my camera that had been set back on Labor Day weekend. This buck I call Fred showed up in the early part of the month in full velvet, and then showed off and on again the rest of the month up until today. Last year he was a 5X4 with main beams that swept upward and gave his rack that “rib cage” look that I think is so neat. I never saw him all last hunting season, so I know he's a survivor. Got this from our friend Jeff Brunner up in Buffalo County. BIG DEER’s top lady hunter does it again! Mike: This is the buck Lisa let walk last muzzleloader season because he was so busted up. He definitely lost some inches and points this year, I believe from the record-breaking hard winter we had. Still a great buck, probably one of her biggest in weight; we’re guessing 210-220 pounds. We believe him to be 5 ½ and possibly 6 1/2 years old. The recent cold snap had the deer on their feet. When Do Buck Racks Go Downhill?

Most of us will never see a 9.5-year-old buck in the wild, but if you did here is what his rack might look like. This funky rack came off a buck that lived his whole life in an enclosure and died of natural causes, so his age is documented. They tell me that just a couple years before his death, this buck wore a nice, typical 10-point rack. According to QDMA biologist Kip Adams, wild bucks grow their largest set of antlers between 5 and 7 years old. The racks start going downhill immediately after that and can regress very quickly due to bucks’ teeth wearing down, impacts from previous injuries and overall old age that impacts their health. Brandon Jennings of the Drury Outdoor Team killed this awesome buck on September 15: We had a weather front move in and it dropped our temps 20 plus degrees and had the deer up and moving early, but we couldn't believe our eyes when we looked to the west and saw Django headed our way at 6:00. He piddled around in the brush for a few minutes without moving more than a yard or two.
