Legendary James Jordan Buck

When you walk into the Cabela’s store in Green Bay, Wisconsin, you see this full-body mount of the Jordan buck, which was shot 99 years ago this fall. The story of this deer is fascinating: One day in 1914 near Danbury, Wisconsin, James Jordan followed some huge deer tracks in the snow. A train roared by and its grind and whistle startled a group of deer, including a monster buck. James threw up his rifle and cracked off a few shots. His last bullet felled the giant. Hunters: Chlorophyll For Scent Control?

Chlorophyll pills are sometimes prescribed to people with extreme bad breath or body odor. Some people use chlorophyll for detoxification, which is in vogue with the hip crowd today. About 30 years ago hunters picked up on this, and started using chlorophyll pills in an effort to help eliminate human odor at the metabolic level. Hunters also chewed gum containing chlorophyll to cut down on breath odor. I wonder if the green tablets or gum really worked for hunter scent control? Giant Typical 10-Pointer is Back!

Back in early July Danny sent this picture of a big 10-pointer that showed up on his hunting property. “Hopefully he hangs around for a few more months," Danny wrote. I said it will be to fun to track this buck and see if Danny gets a crack at him. Update from Danny: Mike, here is what the 10-point has turned into. WOW! How Many Rubs Does a Buck Make?

From QDMA: That depends on a buck's age, and older bucks make more rubs. According to the University of Georgia’s Dr. Karl V. Miller, one mature buck can make 1,000 to 1,200 rubs per year. Considering most rub activity occurs over a 3-month span that would be 10 to 15 per day. So in an area where the deer has an older age structure and a balanced sex ratio, bucks can produce over 3,000 rubs per square mile. Contrast this to a deer herd with a young buck age structure. South Dakota Sioux Falls Buck: Alive at 11.5!

In October 2008 I first blogged about a giant whitetail (12x14 with 240” of rack) that was living in the city limits of East Sioux Falls. Somebody posted a you tube video of him (I don’t see it online now) and it caused mild hysteria amongst hunters and non-hunters alike. At the time people figured the buck was the walking state record. For the last 5-plus years I’ve tracked this amazing deer with the help of Kelly, a hard-core hunter and shedder in the area.
