Fawns Dropping!

2020-06-10T09:23:36-04:00May 22nd, 2013|BigDeer, Deer Science|3 Comments

Tony in NY ran across this little guy this morning. To me there is no finer, precious sight in nature than a whitetail fawn. As a hunter to the core, you know what I'm talking about.

Virginia: Monster Rack Pickup

2020-06-10T09:23:36-04:00May 22nd, 2013|BigDeer, Shed Hunting|7 Comments

The Virginia Whitetails' Facebook page posted this rack/skull that was picked up near Culpepper/Rixeyville (Culpepper Co.), about 30 miles from where I was born and raised and still live. Hard to say what killed this deer. We didn’t have a big EHD outbreak that I know of last year, but the rack does look like it might have scraps of velvet still attached. More likely it was hit by a car, as this is a fairly well populated area. VA is growing some big bucks, maybe I ought to stay closer to home to hunt and film. BTW, that rack has the look of a big one that comes from VA: wide, not the longest tines and a touch gnarly.

If a Doctor Asks About Your Guns…

According to this blog, a Fox News producer recently changed doctors, and the questionnaire the person  filled out at the new medical office asked: “Are you concerned about unsecured weapons in the home?” Strange and incredibly intrusive question, but I had heard this was going to happen with Obamacare. I did not know it was already happening. Fox’s Judge Andrew Napolitano (everybody likes that guy, including me) explained that the question about firearms comes from a post-Sandy Hook executive order by President Obama. Napolitano went on to say that the question is "exceptionally troublesome," but noted that Congress approved of the gun question when it passed Obamacare. "Most people will think they have to answer,” the Judge said. “They don't [...]

Georgia: New Alcohol Limit for Hunters

2020-06-10T09:23:36-04:00May 20th, 2013|BigDeer|1,008 Comments

Recently Georgia house passed SB 136 that would lower from 0.10 to 0.08 the legal intoxication limit for boaters and hunters. That’s the same as it is for drivers. I had never thought about it… Did you know your state might have a legal limit for hunters? Well, take a look at the map I dug up. For example, the gray states restrict the possession and/or discharge of a firearm by a person (any hunter included) who is legally drunk. It makes good sense, you obviously shouldn’t drink and hunt with a firearm, or a bow for that matter…or climb a tree stand. A few beers after the evening hunt is okay, but NEVER before it.

How to Deter a Tree Stand “Line Sitter”

2020-06-10T09:23:36-04:00May 17th, 2013|Big Deer Stories, BigDeer|7 Comments

Mike: “I encountered a funny scene a few years ago while hunting public land in Iowa. Someone had set up a tree stand a few feet off the fence line adjacent to private property. Evidently, a hunter on that private ground wasn't happy. As you can see, look close, very close to the stand I spied this old deer mount in the tree. It had a plastic machine gun and an orange coat hanging around the neck! And strung around the stand site were air fresheners and shiny reflectors. I would say someone was a little irrigated.” Love the blog, keep up the work.--John
