Earlier this month, a friend from southwest Georgia texted me these pictures with the words: Hey brother, a friend of mine killed a solid white buck! Deer of a lifetime! Shortly thereafter, the story appeared on the Georgia Outdoor News website: Back in June, Tara Jackson…saw something that she had never seen before. As a buck ran across a field, she said to her boyfriend Bryan Spivey, “Oh my goodness, that’s a totally white deer!” On Wednesday Sept. 8, Tara got some fresh trail-cam photos showing the buck was still there and it was beginning to shed its velvet…. On Sept. 12…the white buck appeared, and she steadied her aim and took the shot. However, as soon as the bolt [...]

Don’t Let The Flu Ruin Your Hunting Season

Got the following from my health care provider MDVIP. Good info to keep you healthy, safe and hunting throughout the season: COVID-19 restrictions such as social distancing, frequent handwashing, less travel and masking probably muted last year’s flu season, which researchers feared could be bad due to the pandemic. But flu diagnoses and hospitalizations were the lowest in 15 years. Ironically, those lower numbers could foretell a bad flu season for 2021-2022. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warns that reduced population immunity from last year’s light season could cause an early and severe flu season this year. Protect yourself as best you can by: Talk to you doctor about getting a flu shot this year— flu shots help [...]

Today’s great guest blog from our friend Scott Geurink. This is raising them right to love and appreciate our lifestyle: Hi Mike: Our recent youth hunt was a success! My 11- year-old twin girls, Alli and Laci, were both able to take a buck in just over an hour of each other! This was their second year of hunting deer. Last year Laci was shot a spike for her first deer, and Alli got 2 does. This year, both girls agreed the night before the hunt that they were looking for a 6-point or bigger. We hunt in an area of Michigan that has an Antler Point Restriction (APR) of 4 points or more on at least one side; however [...]

BIG DEER Predicts Early Trickle Rut For 2021

For many years the late, great whitetail behaviorist and hunting expert Charles Alsheimer produced his annual Whitetail Calendar, with predictions on how whitetails would rut each fall based on environmental cues like the light intensity of the moon. According to Charlie, in a fall like 2021 when you have a full moon in mid-October and another one in mid-November, the pump is primed for a classic “trickle rut.” “Some does will cue off the October full moon (and come into estrous) while others will cue off the November full moon,” Alsheimer wrote in Deer and Deer Hunting magazine.  “So late October you get a pop in the rut, and then Thanksgiving week you get another pop in the rut, and [...]

Tools For Setting Tree Stands

Guest blog from our friend Matt “Flatlander” Cheever, who hangs and maintains dozens of tree stands each season in Illinois. Great tips as you set stands and prep shooting lanes for the upcoming season: You want your tree stand work to be efficient, and the key is to be organized. Assemble all stands beforehand in the garage or shop; don’t wait to put them together on the tailgate at the hunting property. Paint older stands well in advance, and allow them to air out for a while. A camo pattern made with spray cans is preferred. You can sometimes buy quality spray paint that may be even better than the paint that comes on the original equipment. That can make [...]
