From Realtree 2020 Rack Reports: Florida native Kim Ellis and her husband, Scott, took a road trip to Kentucky to hunt with some friends last fall. November 11 turned out to be a banner day. “It was a quiet, crisp morning,” Kim said. At sunrise two does walked within 30 yards. A 6-pointer followed a half-hour later. After that, activity slowed. Kim blind-called every 15 minutes. Eventually, a doe walked up the hill toward her position. A giant she recognized from trail-cam photos chased hot on her heels. “Thankfully, I was able to get him stopped, and that’s when I released the arrow,” Kim said. The buck wheeled and ran. She called Scott and they waited 45 minutes before blood [...]

Never Take A Head Shot At Deer!

Nobody in his right mind tries to shoot a deer in the head with a bow/arrow/broadhead. But occasionally a bowhunter takes a poor-angle shot, or a buck dips and whirls while an arrow is in the air. The unfortunate result is a broadhead that smacks a deer in the skull. One time in Maryland a hunter dropped a 8-point with a perfect lung shot. The deer wasn’t big enough for a shoulder mount, so he sawed into the skull to do a European. Look what he found in the before and after pictures below. Sunk just below the right eye socket and into the honey-combed nasal area was a piece of an arrow with a 3-blade broadhead. I figure the arrow [...]

A couple of days ago a guy on Twitter posted this photo, and it broke the hunting Internet. I’ve now seen it Tweeted dozens of times and it’s all over Facebook and Instagram as well. From what I can piece together, hunter Jason Kline found the massive deadhead about a week ago on a big tract in northwest Ohio (not high fence) that doesn’t allow any actual hunting, although Jason does have permission to look for sheds there. As you might expect, a buck like this was no secret. People and hunters in the area knew the big deer and had named him Herman. Trail camera pictures of Herman have since showed up online. Nobody knows how the massive buck [...]

Today’s great guest blog by Kansas bowhunter and whitetail fanatic Cody Larrimore: The word “friend” is used in everyday life to describe all sorts of people. However, for the purpose of this story, it should be said from the beginning that when I reference my “friends,” they are not your average ones. They are 4 selfless individuals whose generosity gave me the opportunity at something I only ever dreamed of; something they all personally wanted and something every whitetail hunter wants – a legendary giant. This three-year journey would not have been possible without their support, outrageous generosity, and most of all, friendship. I moved to Kansas in 2017 specifically to pursue whitetails. I left behind everyone I knew including [...]

Today’s guest post (part II) is from Ellie and Zach Atkins, BIG DEER’s favorite hunting couple: Hey Mike, it's Zach, so I'll tell you my story now. I take “rutcation” every year from November 1st-15th from work. Well, this year was amazing! I saw a ton of deer but I was after 2 particular bucks, and by the end of my vacation I only saw them twice. They weren't close enough to shoot. My rutcation ended and I went back to work. The following weekend coming up would be shotgun season here in Illinois, on November 20th. On November 17th, my birthday, Ellie told me, "Hey, go try and buy a buck tag for Mclean County and go out this weekend [...]
