Guest post from Kansas bowhunter Connor Ossowski: After last season, having close encounters with bucks but none in bow range, I decided to spend this past year listening to podcasts, reading articles and learning about strategies on hunting mature buck bedding areas. I bumped this buck out of his bedding area back in September. This was to find his core area. I set a trail camera up near his bed and had multiple trail camera videos of him in October, always earlier and earlier in the evenings. On Friday October 25, I sat in the stand for the first time with a NE wind, 45 degrees, and slight mist after it had rained two days prior. I sat from 12 [...]

Stalk A Rut Buck With Your Bow

You don’t have to wait until gun season to get out of a tree and stalk. One November day bowhunter Don Kisky, Iowa expert and host of Whitetail Freaks on Outdoor Channel, left his Iowa farmhouse with 5 steps in his pocket and a small lock-on stand on his back. He’d been seeing little deer movement from his best stands the last few days, and it was time to change it up. “When bucks are locked down with does and breeding them or getting ready to, many of them aren't in their usual core areas anymore,” he says. “That’s why the woods seem to go dead in mid-November and your stands go cold. Many bucks and does are away from [...]

Breaking: Giant 2019 Bow Buck Could Be New Oklahoma Record

This photo is bombing around social media, for obvious reasons. The Sportsman Channel's Twitter reads: Absolute giant taken down in Oklahoma, possible new typical state record. Could this be close to the World Record?  A beautiful and amazing typical that I believe will net 200. State record? Likely. Eclipse the Hanson Buck, which has held the top typical spot for more than 2 decades? I have seen and put my hands on Milo's deer, and I don't believe this Oklahoma deer will top it, but... If anybody knows the hunter and has more details, let me know. I'll be in Oklahoma in early December and would love to interview him and feature that amazing rack on Big Deer TV. I'll [...]

How To Hunt Deer When The Corn Gets Cut

Look at the first trail camera image, a lot of bucks including this giant drop tine had been walking the chute between the standing corn and the hedgerow for a month. Image 2 shows the corn recently cut, and since then no deer have shown up on camera. It's like this all over the country in October, fields of standing corn are being cut, so how do you adjust? The days after a farmer cuts the crops can be awesome for hunting. The sudden change in habitat forces deer to move around a lot as they settle into new bed-to-feed patterns. The animals will seek out alternative food sources (most often acorns and browse) and especially new bedding/travel cover in [...]

Oklahoma Bowhunter Rings In New Season With 200-Inch Giant

From Oklahoman.com: Jeff Booth almost didn’t take his bow with him (last) Wednesday. He was planning to drive up from his Broken Arrow home to his hunting lease in northeast Oklahoma to just put up a camera near a deer stand. He figured the chances of killing a nice buck on the second day of archery season in 90-plus degree weather were remote at best. “I have never killed a good deer in October,” said Booth. Booth had a change of heart, however, and grabbed his bow at the last minute. He decided if he was going to drive all that way, he might as well take his bow and sit in the deer stand for a while. He is [...]
