BIG DEER blogger Dan has been watching 30-plus bucks all summer, including the 2 studs above. He writes in an update: None of them have dispersed yet, and there are more bucks showing up… I got over 4,000 pics this past week alone and saw several new bucks!  Some of the regulars were back that I had thought moved on. I'm certain that they will separate and move away very soon, but I've never had this many bucks stick around this long. Or, maybe I'm wrong and they will stick around for the whole family to chase all season! This could be an awesome year for us.  Today is the bow opener for Dan. He’s taking his daughter, Lexi, right after [...]

Hunters: Drive and Park Smart to Prevent Fires

More than 70 wildfires are burning in 8 Western states, dozens of them in hot and dry Montana, where 2017 archery elk and deer seasons are opening up. Residents and the many out-of-staters that hunt Big Sky are wondering how the dry conditions and fire danger might affect their hunting. As of today, Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks (FWP) is not recommending the closure of any seasons. “(But) if a private landowner or an agency such as the Forest Service or Bureau of Land Management makes the decision to restrict or postpone hunting or other activity on their property, that is a decision we respect and accept," said FWP Director Martha Williams. Due to fire danger, currently more than 80 [...]

Photo: Winnipeg City Monster Buck!

Mike emailed me this image, pulled from a computer screen, of a monster whitetail that is living within the city limits of Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada. Wow! Archery season in Manitoba opens in 2 days, August 30. I wonder how many guys who hunt on property that borders the city limit side where this giant has been spotted hope he slips across the boundary and onto private land where they hunt? Will be interesting to see is this buck is shot in the coming weeks, I’ll keep an eye out for it. We’ve posted some giants that live in cities and suburbs over the years, like the above from Urbandale, Iowa. And this buck was spotted living and feeding in a [...]

Best Woods Spots For Trail Cameras

Mike: Missouri just banned all feeding and minerals, even salt, in the county that I hunt due to two cases of Chronic Wasting Disease. Seems like a dramatic ruling for just two cases, but that is the way it goes. When I put out trail cameras now, do you think that without the attractant, deer will still visit the same places? Or am I at square one? Eighty percent of the 400-acre farm I hunt is just woods, no food plots. Any suggestions?—Marc from MO Marc: While it seems like an overreaction, scientists across the country have increased the alarm about the threat of CWD, so we all should expect more decisions like that. To your question, if you have used the same mineral [...]

2 Monster Roadkill Bucks

Seems like I have seen an inordinate number of deer hit and killed on the roads this summer, what about you? Every auto deer kill is a shame, but the 2 below really hurt. This 200" plus non-typical was reportedly killed in the Fort Campbell area of Kentucky. I bet the hunter(s) who were scouting that giant are sick. I bet trail-cam pictures of this deer will surface soon. Word is this cool buck was found roadside in Indiana. In addition to the rack, beautiful dark face. This buck died weeks ago, his rack would have grown a bunch more now.
