First cam picture of the year from our friend Danny. Send me your pictures (mikehanback@yahoo.com) as you get them so that we can watch the bucks grow along with you! I’ll keep the locations of the deer top secret if you wish: Had the trail cams up for about a week. Got this guy to watch this year. Didn't get any good front pics of him. But, for early June he's showing potential.  Imagine if those brows keep growing. Absolutely love this time of year. Had over 300 pics in 6 days. 13 different bucks. My family's property has always been the summer range for bucks. Wish they'd stick around all season! When my daughter saw the first pic of this guy [...]

Wisconsin DNR: No Doe Tags For 13 Counties

With whitetail herds struggling or holding their own in some areas of the Upper Midwest, one of the questions being raised: Have hunters been shooting too many does? I suspect we have been killing too many in places, as I talked about in this post last year: For the last 20 years, state game agencies encouraged us to shoot more and more deer, and especially does. Hunters obliged; some guys killed 5, 10 or more. Personally I have never understood why a person would want or need to shoot more than 5 deer in a season; surely that is enough to fill your blood lust and your freezer, and donate a couple of animals to the food bank. But the agencies had [...]

How to Make A Deer Mineral Lick

2020-06-10T09:19:39-04:00March 17th, 2015|BigDeer, Deer Management|Comments Off on How to Make A Deer Mineral Lick

Right now, from late winter through spring, is the time to establish a mineral lick for deer. “Although deer only need very small quantities of trace minerals to express their full antler growth potential, without them in their diet, they simply can’t express their full genetic potential,” says whitetail scientist Grant Woods. Also, minerals provide a power boost for lactating does and the fetal development of fawns. Here’s how to make a lick: Deer will find your salt and minerals anywhere you put them out, but to maximize your efforts, look for a quiet spot on an oak ridge or in a creek bottom. A corner of a field or food plot is a good spot so long as it is [...]

South Carolina Deer Hunting: First Statewide Buck Limits

2020-06-10T09:19:51-04:00March 9th, 2015|BigDeer, Deer Management, Hunting News|3 Comments

If you’re not from anywhere near South Carolina, it will probably be hard for you to believe that in most parts of the state, there has never been a limit on the number of whitetail bucks a hunter can shoot. I repeat, no limit, ever! That might be about to change. State bill S454 would establish a limit of four bucks and four does per hunter per year. The potential changes in deer management are just what Charles Ruth, Deer and Wild Turkey Program Coordinator for the S.C. DNR, has been in favor of for years. “This is looking at the future of deer management in South Carolina. We’re trying to get something more mainstream here like other states have from [...]

Hunter Shoots Coyote That Attacked Doe!

2020-06-10T09:19:51-04:00March 2nd, 2015|BigDeer, Deer Management, Predator Hunting|3 Comments

This from our friend Adam in Nebraska: Today, I was reminded why I hunt predators. As soon as my buddy Justin hit the caller, a doe whipped her head up from her bed 50 yards in front of me on the other side of the river. Thirty seconds in, as she's analyzing the sound, she turns to look behind her. Out of nowhere, a coyote leaps into the air and pounces on top of her. It latched onto the back of her neck and she stood and started to buck and kick. The coyote lost its hold and the doe ran into the middle of the river. The coyote chased her and stood on the bank yipping at her, where he [...]
