All us humans need a sanctuary, a place where we feel safe and comfortable hanging out, sometimes alone and sometimes with friends. A refuge we can come home to and flop into bed after dinner, or a long night out on the town. Old bucks need those shelters too. They're called sanctuaries. Now, before full spring green-up, is the perfect time to roam your hunting ground and find them. A sanctuary is the major bedding and security cover for the deer that live on or travel through your property. There are smaller satellite covers dotted around the woods that bucks use frequently, but here we’re talking about the main safe zone. Quick, how many licensed bowhunters are there in America? How bout 3.7 million. The Archery Trade Association worked with the National Deer Association and state wildlife agencies to identify the number of licensed residents in each state that bowhunted in the 2021-22 season. “This is the most reliable single-source of bowhunting participation data generated to date,” said Jeff Poole, ATA president and CEO. “We are pleased to share this information and know the data serves as a benchmark to inspire growth nationwide.” The data is available here: 2021 State-by-State Hunting Data, 3.7 Million Bowhunters in America along with harvest statistics for each state.     Go Erie reports that on October 15, 2022, Anthony Faus of East Berlin Pa. shot a giant buck with a crossbow that netted 228 3/8-inch, the second largest non-typical whitetail ever recorded in the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s big game records. “It’s one of the most impressive deer racks I’ve seen as part of scoring in my 15 years of being an official scorer,” said Bob D’Angelo, coordinator for the state's Big Game Scoring Program. The 22-pointer had an outside spread of 26 7/8 inches. In this day and age of social media, most people who kill a world-class deer go online to brag about it, and to potentially get fame and fortune from a bow company, camo maker, [...]

Jason Morton spotted the buck and knew right away the animal was old. The deer was a bag of bones, and walked stiffly with a slow, hip-swaying gait. The 7-point antlers were on the heavy side, but stubby and going downhill from what the rack must have been a few years ago. The “Legend,” as the buck was known around this part of southeast Kansas, walked closer, and Jason had a decision to make. He raised his CZ rifle in 6.5 PRC and looked once more at the ancient deer through the scope. Doubt he’ll make it through another tough winter, Jason thought as he pressed the trigger. Minutes later guide Brian Helman got a text but no picture: Ever [...]
