A 6-year research project conducted in Texas found that bobcat scat contains much more deer during the month of June—the major fawning period-- than any other time of the year. This and other studies have concluded that while bobcats across their range do indeed prey on fawn deer in the spring, they are not a major predator, and only rarely kill adult deer.But a big male cat is an opportunistic eater of even big deer! How Many Whitetail Bucks Do Hunters Kill Across America?

According to the National Deer Association’s 2023 Deer Report hunters in the Northeast, Southeast and Midwest regions combined killed a total of 2,969,596 whitetail bucks during the 2021-22 season. That’s the fourth highest buck kill in America over the past 10 seasons. An impressive 40% of those bucks harvested across the nation were 3½ years of age or older. Hunters in the Southeast shoot the most mature deer; 84% of the bucks tagged in Dixie in 2021-22 were 2½ years or older. Top 5 states for total buck harvest: Texas (447,972 bucks); Michigan (223,476); Wisconsin (153,112); Pennsylvania (145,320); Missouri (143,815).

A hunter who wishes to remain anonymous sent this story and picture. Mike: A guy looking for sheds found this buck yesterday on a farm in Illinois. I had hunted that farm and that buck for 2 years. The deer was still lying in the woods for days because the DNR had not shown up yet to look things over and issue the shed hunter a salvage tag for the rack.
