Maryland: “Colossus” Bow Buck!

2020-06-10T09:22:47-04:00September 15th, 2014|Big Deer Stories, BigDeer|3 Comments

Thanks to Tony for letting us know about this monster that a hunter shot in Charles County, Maryland last week (they kill some big deer every year in that county). Cool buck, main-frame 10 w/split G-2s and super-wide. After battling the heat and mosquitoes for a couple days, it cooled off a bit and Jon got the monster he and his wife had named “Colossus.” Way to go man! Read the story at Marylandwhitetail.com

4 Great Bow Stands for Deer

2020-06-10T09:22:47-04:00September 11th, 2014|BigDeer, Deer Hunting, Deer Management|3 Comments

Here are 4 places where you can’t go wrong hanging tree stands in the coming weeks. Break Lines: Look for linear strips where dark pine timber and/or hardwoods come together with brush, tall grass, second-growth saplings, etc. Deer love to walk and browse on these edges year-round; bucks rub and scrape like mad on the lines as the rut approaches. Oak Ridges. A narrow hogback with acorn trees within 100 yards of a corn or bean field is one of my favorite spots. Deer cut around points, ditches and gullies on the ridges; hang stands on or near these terrains to funnel bucks close for shots. Does and bucks eat acorns and browse in ridge thickets not only in the evenings, [...]

Manitoba Velvet Bow Buck!

2020-06-10T09:22:47-04:00September 10th, 2014|BigDeer|4 Comments

Here is my full-velvet, long-tined stud whitetail from opening night here in Manitoba. Over the past two months I've dropped and sacrificed almost everything in hopes of nailing down a pattern on this buck. I knew I had to for a chance at him. Literally every evening I had free over July and August I worked on trail cam setups and scouted to try and learn more about this buck and others, and their unpredictable behavior on the flatland prairies of the province. Opening evening nearing sunset, the buck ran in with two other nice bucks, stopped for a split-second and gave me all I needed to place a clean and almost instant kill shot from my stand above him. Who’s Working Out for Deer Season?

2020-06-10T09:22:47-04:00September 9th, 2014|BigDeer|12 Comments

Hi Mike, I was wondering if you could ask the bloggers what they are doing to get in shape for the upcoming season. Everyone has their own workout plan, and I would be interested to know what those are. At this point mine is: walk 3 miles 5 times a week, and do some sit-ups and push-ups each morning. Later in September I plan to add a small pack with weight in it for my walks. —Thanks, Mike M. Ok, who’s sweating? If you’re not you should start, you’ll feel better and hunt better. My pre-season (and all-year except when I’m traveling/filming/hunting) routine: Walk dog once or twice daily (7-12 miles a week); jog with sprint intervals for 3 miles 3 days [...]

Mike: I got this picture on my trail camera in Halifax County, VA. I set some traps and today I caught a female 100 yards from where I got the picture. Hopefully she is the culprit! Thought you might enjoy the picture. –Thanks, Chad
