Dr. Grant Woods, one of America’s top whitetail biologists and habitat specialists, says that many hunters make deer management out to be way too complicated, like it is Advanced Trig or something. “It’s simple math,” he says. “If you plant some food and make some improvements to your land, you can go from having maybe 50 percent deer that live on your property and 50 percent that just travel through, to maybe 80 percent that live on your land and 20 percent that are transient.” In other words, you might increase the number of does and bucks that live in core areas on your spot by some 30 percent, which naturally will lead to more deer sightings and more buck [...]

Associated Press: While the COVID-19 crisis has created untold hardships for people, it’s been a boon for wildlife. Animals appear to be taking advantage of quieter streets and less industry to explore new areas. Hard data will eventually be available, as naturalists will no doubt study the effect of the pandemic for some time. But for now, people who work with wildlife say they’re convinced reduced human interaction is benefiting animals. Most obvious, with most of us stuck at home, there is far less traffic on the roads. Far fewer squirrels, opossums, rabbits and other small mammals are getting run over. If you live in a wooded area, you’ve noticed that squirrels are everywhere! When this pandemic resides and the stay-at-home orders are finally relaxed, we all look forward to 2 things: getting back to work, and going deer hunting this fall. In the wake of COVID-19, having seen and endured great disruptions to our supply chains and food supply, and facing the reality that we could be locked down again in the future, I believe that more Americans than ever will hunt whitetails come October and November. Most will hunt within 30 miles of their homes, hoping to shoot one or more deer (up to the legal limit) for the freezer. Whether you are a seasoned veteran or a newbie, you should strive to hunt your best this season, not only for the [...]

The Quality Deer Management Association (QDMA) has released its 12th annual Whitetail Report, a comprehensive update on the status of white-tailed deer including harvest trends through the 2018-19 season, the most recent hunting season with complete deer harvest data available from most whitetail states and Canadian provinces. In 2018-19, the total national buck harvest was 2,908,155. For comparison, the modern record buck harvest of 3.1 million was set in 1999. The big news is that across the U.S. and Canada in 2018-19, the percentage of yearling bucks (1½ years old) in the total antlered buck harvest fell to 30%, the lowest ever recorded. “The fact that less than 1 in 3 antlered bucks shot today is 1½ years old is amazing,” [...]
