Check out the 3rd beam on the left side of this rack, what caused it?
A 3rd beam on a whitetail deer’s rack is the result of either non-typical genetics or an injury. If this buck were 5 years of age or older, I’d say the cause was genetics. But he’s younger than that, so the extra beam is likely the result of an injury.
QDMA biologist Kip Adams agrees: “That buck injured his antler very early in the growing process that year. If the buck would have survived the season he would not have had a third beam again the following year.”
I’ve never shot a buck with 3 beams, have you? Send me a picture.
Just shot one in Kansas yesterday.
I saw a three beamed buck while driving in Kentucky once, but never while I was hunting. I’d sure like to put one on the wall though.
Back in 2013 on our infamous 3 bucks 4 friend trip to Northern Maine my buddy shot a 21/2yr 7pt that had a third peticle/beam. It only had a nub but a legit 3rd beam, wish he let it go but as he’s new to hunting I couldn’t blame him for the harvest. Sorry didn’t have any good up close pics of the deers rack.
Maybe the genetics are still running around in that area, you never know what could step out….
