It’s time to celebrate these beautiful little creatures that are being born right now! Did you know: A fawn weighs 4 to 8 pounds at birth; their weight doubles in 2 weeks. A fawn has a unique smell that the mother recognizes. A fawn spends its first month in hiding, separate from the doe, except to nurse 2 to 4 times a day. A healthy fawn can outrun you when it’s only days old. A fawn has about 300 white spots. 25% of twin fawns have different fathers. In a typical herd, twin fawns is the norm. In a prime habitat where the soil/feed/cover is outstanding, 20% to 30% of does might drop triplets. In a habitat with poor soils [...]

What Is Important To You: Killing A Deer Or Hunting It?

2020-06-10T09:14:50-04:00May 26th, 2020|Big Deer TV, Deer Hunting, sportsman channel, whitetail deer|1 Comment

Mike: I saw this quote in your BIO and it intrigued me: “I am finally at that point in life where the killing of an animal has become secondary to the challenge of hunting it.” Could you please explain?—Paul Paul, thanks for the question. When I was in my teens and 20s, it was it was all about shooting as many deer, squirrels, turkeys, whatever as I could. Stack ‘em up. Legal numbers of course. One thing I have never done, even as a kid, is broken a game law. I think the “if brown it’s down” mentality, that thirst and hunger to kill deer, is natural for young hunters. And within reason I think it’s important. To keep a [...]

7 Ways To Identify Poison Ivy

2020-06-10T09:14:50-04:00May 20th, 2020|Big Deer TV, BigDeer, Deer Hunting, sportsman channel, whitetail deer|1 Comment

Expect to see gonzo poison ivy in the coming years, thicker, leafier and itchier than ever. A study from Duke and Harvard found that as carbon dioxide levels rise in the atmosphere, the noxious vine grows bigger and faster and is stoked with high-octane urushiol, the chemical that causes your skin to redden, bubble up and inch like hell. Is this another conspiracy theory of the greenie-weenies? Is global warming/climate change even a thing? Like most fair-minded people I don’t really know. But we’re talking about poison ivy here, and I do know I’m seeing more clumps of the nasty stuff growing up trees and overtaking thickets in some areas. It's more important than ever for hunters and all outdoors [...]

Ohio Cold-Front Big Buck

2020-06-10T09:14:50-04:00May 18th, 2020|Big Deer Stories, BigDeer, Deer Hunting, whitetail deer|Comments Off on Ohio Cold-Front Big Buck

From the Big Deer archives: Mike: Just wanted to pass along a picture of a nice whitetail I killed in Ohio. I know you get a ton of pictures from hunters, but I wanted to send you this one as proof of what you preach. I shot this buck after a front passed through and it turned cold. I've heard you say on your show how you like to hunt after a cold front goes through. Well, I have to agree with you. This buck had not been seen in the earlier archery season or the prior 4 days of our gun season. When the front passed through and the temperature dropped he got up and made his mistake. Thanks [...]

Are Most Deer Poachers Also Drug Dealers?

2020-06-10T09:14:50-04:00May 15th, 2020|Deer Hunting, Hunting News, whitetail deer|Comments Off on Are Most Deer Poachers Also Drug Dealers?

Working a tip one time, Kentucky wildlife officers went to a guy’s house and arrested him on suspicion of illegally killing of 48 deer. 48! While there, the officers also discovered marijuana plants, indoor grow lights, a cloning system, 16 bags of processed weed, more than 100 pills in plastic bags, 19 firearms and some cash. A Conservation Officer said at the time, “As for those who do this, most of them don’t have jobs and the biggest percentage are also into drugs.” Why anybody would poach 48 deer is beyond me, but that's another story. Most troubling here is, “the biggest percentage (of poachers) are also into drugs.” That is a really broad statement, and I wonder if it [...]
