Right now is the perfect time to grab your hunting rifles and head to the shooting range. The joint will be empty this time of year, especially on weekdays. You can test different brands of ammo, sight-in a new scope or just practice with your old rigs without a crowd of shooters breathing down your neck for bench time like they would come September on the brink of another hunting season. The more you fine-tune your rifles and shoot in the off-season, the better your chances of a one-shot game kill this fall. Here are 8 tips that will get you on zero and ready extra-early. Easy Save-Money Sight-In Rather than sighting-in the old way--firing a bunch of bullets at [...]

Finally, some good news from my home state. In a statement the NRA said: Thanks to Second Amendment supporters around the Commonwealth ceaselessly voicing their opposition to a sweeping gun ban, the Senate Judiciary Committee voted 10-5 to reject House Bill 961 on February 17th. Bloomberg’s House majority in the General Assembly is not going to deliver their most coveted agenda item to their billionaire master. House Bill 961 was a comprehensive ban on many commonly-owned semi-automatic firearms, suppressors, and standard capacity magazines. The original bill sought to impose a licensing and registration scheme for citizens who wish to keep affected firearms they lawfully owned prior to the ban, with felony penalties for noncompliance. Hunting from one stand on and off for a month last fall, I saw 12 different bucks. Most were small, two were borderline shooters that I passed and one 9-pointer was 150-class. Hot after a doe one day, the giant rolled off the ridge across from me and crashed down into a slough, out of muzzleloader range and moving too fast for a shot. I didn’t shoot any buck from the stand, and that is all right. Getting skunked sometimes is part of the game. Just the other day I went [...]

The Quality Deer Management Association (QDMA) has released its 12th annual Whitetail Report, a comprehensive update on the status of white-tailed deer including harvest trends through the 2018-19 season, the most recent hunting season with complete deer harvest data available from most whitetail states and Canadian provinces. In 2018-19, the total national buck harvest was 2,908,155. For comparison, the modern record buck harvest of 3.1 million was set in 1999. The big news is that across the U.S. and Canada in 2018-19, the percentage of yearling bucks (1½ years old) in the total antlered buck harvest fell to 30%, the lowest ever recorded. “The fact that less than 1 in 3 antlered bucks shot today is 1½ years old is amazing,” [...]
