The first 2015 BIG DEER field report is in, and it comes with a fabulous picture of a fabulous buck: Hi Mike: Have followed your show and blog reports for years and am finally happy to say that I harvested a deer of a lifetime. My buck was shot in Buffalo County, Wisconsin, and scores 181 gross, with 23 5/8” mains, 15 points, inside spread of 20 5/8”, and only 2.5” inches of side to side difference as a main frame 12! Truly blessed to harvest an animal of such beauty, which I shot on the 3rd day. Passed a 140” 10-point two hours into my hunt, and then shot the big buck. Thought you would like to see it.--Ed [...]

Wear clothing suitable for for the weather, stay level-headed, and always alert other hunters to your presence in an area, he says. Other tips from Dr. Grube: Watch for heart attack warning signs. One study of middle-aged male hunters found that the activities inherent to hunting -- [...]

Bowhunting Deer: The Perfect Tree Stand

2020-06-10T09:17:03-04:00September 21st, 2015|BigDeer|2 Comments

Got this email recently from Jeff: My son was introduced to bowhunting by my brother, and last year he went out and shot a big 8 pointer. I was reading your article in Bowhunting World magazine about a hunter named Shane Good getting 3 big deer from the same stand. Well, my son will not be moving from his stand anytime soon! The point I was making in that article is that some tree stands are in the perfect spot and produce a good buck year after year after year. Not all stands mind you but some. Here’s the gist of it from that story: “One October afternoon several years ago, Ontario bowhunter Shane Good shot the buck of his dreams: [...]

BIG DEER Moon & Rut Hunting Guide 2015

2020-06-10T09:17:03-04:00September 18th, 2015|Big Deer TV, Deer Hunting, Deer Management, Deer Science|3 Comments

From Kansas to Virginia to Canada, 95 percent of adult does will come into estrous and be bred from roughly November 5-20, regardless of moon phase, or weather for that matter. And anytime you hunt rutting deer you have the potential to shoot a good buck. But I do believe that some days and weeks are better than others to take your hunt vacation according to the various phases of the “rutting moon” in late October and November. A lot of people are moon skeptics, but not me. There are a lot of variables to moon phase [...]
