How Many Rubs Does a Buck Make?

From QDMA: That depends on a buck's age, and older bucks make more rubs. According to the University of Georgia’s Dr. Karl V. Miller, one mature buck can make 1,000 to 1,200 rubs per year. Considering most rub activity occurs over a 3-month span that would be 10 to 15 per day. So in an area where the deer has an older age structure and a balanced sex ratio, bucks can produce over 3,000 rubs per square mile. Contrast this to a deer herd with a young buck age structure. There, yearling bucks will make less than half as many rubs, so you may only have 400 to 500 rubs per square mile. By the way, yearling bucks make only [...]

South Dakota Sioux Falls Buck: Alive at 11.5!

In October 2008 I first blogged about a giant whitetail (12x14 with 240” of rack) that was living in the city limits of East Sioux Falls. Somebody posted a you tube video of him (I don’t see it online now) and it caused mild hysteria amongst hunters and non-hunters alike. At the time people figured the buck was the walking state record. For the last 5-plus years I’ve tracked this amazing deer with the help of Kelly, a hard-core hunter and shedder in the area. Kelly wrote me awhile back with this update: Mike, I'm running out of room! You should remember the buck mounted on the wall, that’s “you-tube" from east of Sioux Falls. Last year, just before scheduled shedding [...]

Top 10 Tactics on BIG DEER TV!

2020-06-10T09:23:22-04:00August 7th, 2013|Big Deer TV, BigDeer, Deer Hunting, Deer Management|3 Comments

Tonight on the show (8 and 11 PM Eastern on Sportsman Channel) I lay out my Top 10 whitetail tactics, one or a few of which I hope will help you shoot a giant this fall. Here’s an example from the script: # 3 Hunt Terrain, Not Sign (with graphic): “Many hunters find hot rubs and scrapes and rush out to hang a tree stand right beside it. Sometimes that works out, but there’s a better way to do it. Hot sign is obviously important because it tells you bucks are in the area and active. Then scout out from those rubs/scrapes/trails for 50 yards, 100, even 200 yards. Find those draws, creek crossings, points of ridges...that bucks have traveled for years, [...]

Amazing Photo: Predator Barn!

From Boone-Crockett.com: Will Huppertz of Alberta is an expert in the art of harvesting coyotes and wolves. This is the result of his 2012 season: 352 Coyotes and 31 Wolves. Because of the large populations of predators, Alberta's game laws set no limit on either wolves or coyotes. This is awesome and almost as cool as the house of fox pelts we posted last year, but not quite. I like the fox house better.

Deer Blood Trails: Did You Know?

2020-06-10T09:23:22-04:00August 6th, 2013|BigDeer, Bowhunting, Deer Hunting, Deer Management, Deer Science|2 Comments

Did you know that if you shoot a buck in a few weeks, he might not leave a heavy blood trail? Scientists say that in early fall deer have high levels of Vitamin K, which causes blood to clot quickly. Also, whitetails produce lots of B-endorphin that helps to heal wounds. So two things: Pick your shots carefully (you never want a one-lung hit and especially in the early season). And I recommend a big-cutting broadhead like the Rage; even if you hit a buck a little off, he’ll bleed and you’ll likely find him. Bottom line: If you put any broadhead/arrow in the right spot, through both lungs, a buck won’t go much farther than 60-70 yards, even if [...]
