Deer with Huge Growth: What is This Thing?

Blogger Danny sent this image he got recently, and here’s what he said about it: "I sent this picture to a local game warden who sent it to one of his biologist friends who thinks it is a cutaneous fibroma caused by a virus. I looked back on your blog at a similar post, and that is what you said was the real name for the growths or warts can appear on deer. "But I’m not 100% certain that this isn’t her eyeball bulging. I remember last fall seeing a doe in the front yard that appeared to have a swollen eyeball, but nothing near the size of what it is now. That thing is huge! "But I guess it’s possible [...]

BIG DEER TV 2016 Episode 2: Kodiak Alaska Blacktail

In episode 1 last week, BIG DEER TV producer Justin, cameramen Bill and Christian and I embarked on a do-it-yourself hunt for Sitka blacktail on Kodiak Island. Last October we flew into the town of Kodiak and from there took a bush plane to Larsen Bay, where we met up with Mike Flores, our captain and transporter. We boarded the 47-foot Arctic Endeavor, our home for week, and motored out into Larsen Bay and the waters beyond. I had hunted in Alaska 5 times, but not for many years. And this was my first trip to Kodiak. As we motored out, the sky was clear and spectacular, the seas calm. Whales rolled alongside the boat. We spotted a few deer, [...]

3 Tips to Age Summer Bucks

From Cody: I recently put up my trail cam and captured a picture of a deer I have never seen before. I have more than one photo of this deer so I know he is continuously coming back into my area. I can’t seem to age him and was wondering what your thoughts were? I am from the great hunting state of Iowa and also wondering if this is a normal size for a buck this time of the year.   Whitetail bucks can be tricky to judge in late spring and summer when they are happy, lazy, fat and stress-free, especially in high-producing agricultural areas with great nutrition. Many people overestimate the age of a buck now. I ran [...]

This is the weekend to go to the beach or pool, do a little fishing or hiking, play golf, grill out… And if you’re serious about your hunting, drive to your spot, lather on the tick and bug repellent, set some cameras and find some bucks to hunt in 3 or 4 months. I’ve had a few cameras out for a while, but now around July 4th is when I start my recon in earnest. Velvet antlers are up and growing full bore; when you get an image of a buck with potential, you’ll know it and can start tracking and patterning his movements. One day this weekend I’ll set 2 cameras on 2 half-acre clover plots hidden back in [...]

Danny sent this image with the message, "First buck with potential this year." Yes, and he's got a good 6 weeks to grow more bone. Anxious to see how that split brow ends up. Send me your camera images as you get them so we can share and get fired up for the season. I'll keep the location of the bucks your secret, I promise.
