First Trail Camera Buck 2014!

One of our bloggers who shall remain anonymous sent us the first good buck of 2014. This buck’s antlers might grow 1/8” to 1/2” per day for the next 2 months, until the rack is fully developed in early to mid-August. Those brow tines will be killer. Nothing fires us up more and seems to make the season get here a little quicker than looking at trail-camera images from around the country. Email me your pictures to share. As always I’ll never publish your name and certainly not the state/area where your cam bucks are living. That’s your secret and I’d never blow your cover.

Weird Racks: Peruke Deer Antlers

Mike: I know how you like wild racks, check out this one! Have you ever seen anything like that before? Tom from Iowa I did a little research. A QDMA post says this crazy skull was picked up in Maryland some years ago. The taxidermist that now has it said a couple of hunters had seen the buck alive, but it was “acting stupid.” A year later the buck was found dead. Examination found that the right antler had sprouted up in a perfect cauliflower, but the left antler had grown inward, back into the skull and down into the brain pan and eye socket. Estimate Your Deer’s Weight

The old-time deer hunters didn’t care what a buck scored, all they wanted to know was, “What did that sucker weigh?” A lot of hunters still want to know just that, especially up in Maine where a 200 is a much sought after 200-hundred pounda. Here’s simple math for estimating a deer’s live weight. Pull the guts out of your animal, hang it and weigh it on a scale, pull up the calculator on your Smartphone and multiply the deer’s field-dressed weight by 1.28. That will give you a good ball-park. For example, a 150-pound gutted buck would have weighed about 192 on the hoof, give or take 5 pounds. A 120-pound doe would have gone about 154. What is the heaviest buck [...]

Mike: Every time I walk into my favorite stand I jump four or five deer that blow up and crash away. I have the wind right, and I am quiet. What am I doing wrong? I just heard an amazing and almost unbelievable stat: in 20 years every person in the world will have a “pet drone” or at least access to a drone, just like everybody now has a cell phone. What will the billions of drones in the sky mean for our hunting? Is there any place for a drone in the deer woods?
