\ Next week we will be traveling across Wisconsin and filming hunters who have shot giant bucks, telling their stories and featuring their bucks for a special episode of BIG DEER TV to air later this fall. Here’s one of those bucks that appeared on the blog in 2010:   Tom Taylor has more than one reason to remember September 26, 2009. That was the day he was married—and the day a giant buck stepped in front of his trail camera. After Tom returned home from his Mexican honeymoon he retrieved the camera and couldn’t believe the image he saw. He named the gnarly-racked deer “Wedding Crasher.” The 09 season came and went, and Tom never saw the buck. The next [...]

Biggest Threat to Deer Hunting

A poll by huntersurvey.com found that 23 percent, or one in 4 hunters, lost access to private land they had hunted for years, or at least had their access to that land significantly restricted. Looking inside those numbers, 52 percent of the respondents who had lost access said their hunting time was reduced as a result; 11 percent said the loss of land/access kept them from hunting altogether.  In short, they threw in the towel. Danny’s had his cams out for 2 weeks and says: “Got a couple decent bucks. Hopefully the big 10 hangs around for a few more months.” (I hope so too, that’s a good deer, great brows, with quite a bit more growing to do. Will be fun to track this buck and see if Danny gets him.) “The biggest surprise was the bear. We had heard rumors there was one running around, but didn’t really believe it. We believe it now!”

I got an email from Steven, who had gone back through the Big Deer Blog archives and pictures and come to this conclusion: You try to make hunting out to be some great and honorable thing, but there is nothing great or honorable about what you do. Hunting is a joke unless you need the meat to survive. (Note: I paraphrase and clean up some of his language.) My first inclination was to tell old Steve to shove it, but I thought better of it and typed this response: I do not hunt to be great or honorable, just the opposite. For me hunting is a simple, spiritual and deeply personal pleasure. It is a part of how I was formed [...]
