We are editing the new season of BIG DEER TV, which will begin airing in July on Sportsman Channel. I was fascinated studying the interview and footage we shot with my friend Eddie Stevenson, who a few years ago shot one of the rarest whitetail deer in America. Here’s the story and some information: One day in the Texas Hill Country, a buck stepped out of the brush and Eddie Stevenson did a double take. It wasn’t the size of the rack, but the animal’s color—mahogany all over, with an even darker head and face. Eddie shot the buck, and the one-in-a-million mount now hangs on his wall. “I know he’s a young buck, but this deer was on a [...]

When this pandemic resides and the stay-at-home orders are finally relaxed, we all look forward to 2 things: getting back to work, and going deer hunting this fall. In the wake of COVID-19, having seen and endured great disruptions to our supply chains and food supply, and facing the reality that we could be locked down again in the future, I believe that more Americans than ever will hunt whitetails come October and November. Most will hunt within 30 miles of their homes, hoping to shoot one or more deer (up to the legal limit) for the freezer. Whether you are a seasoned veteran or a newbie, you should strive to hunt your best this season, not only for the [...]

Saw this from one of our followers, Scott, on the @bigdeertv Instagram: I have had a lot of people ask for build plans for this bench. I posted the website. The bench is made with pressure treated wood and cost me $107 dollars to make. Plans give cut measurements and detailed directions for build. Enjoy. I know that many of you would like to build one of these on your land (if you have a safe spot for a rifle range) or out on your deer lease, so I researched it further. I went to the blog for the build and was impressed. First, they give you a list of tools you’ll need: circular saw, drill, bits, etc. Then, they [...]

Medical experts say that good nutrition, sleep and exercise are key to maintaining a healthy and strong immune system as we navigate these tough times with covid-19. With gyms and sports fields and clubs closed across the country, outdoor exercise, which gives us fresh air and helps to cure cabin fever for a bit, is the way to go if we do it smartly and safely. Hiking Last Saturday I needed to get out of the house for a day, not just for a stroll but something more vigorous. I was frustrated because I was supposed to be in southeast Georgia, hunting the spring turkey opener. Covid-19 cancelled that. I picked a moderately strenuous 9-mile section of the Appalachian Trail [...]

What Is A “Deadhead” Buck?

Mike, I’ve been hearing a lot about deadhead bucks lately, what are they? –Jill, Pennsylvania Jill: A deadhead is the commonly used term for a buck deer carcass, that somebody finds in the woods. Unlike single antlers, which all bucks naturally lose each year before growing new ones, a deadhead’s rack is still attached to the skull. Generally the buck has been dead for several months and been ravaged by weather and predators; all that might remain is the head, spine, other bones and some old hide and hair. A deadhead buck might have died of any number of causes: hit by a car and ran off a died…shot and lost by a hunter the previous season…winter kill…predator kill…or a [...]
