Nobody wants to blow a shot and wound a deer, but it happens. If you wing or graze a buck with an arrow or bullet, will he return and stay in his core area, or will he leave for good? I reached out to a couple of America’s top deer biologists who are also hard-core hunters for their thoughts. “Yes, a mature buck will come back to the area where he was injured,” says Kip Adams of the Quality Deer Management Association. “Depending on where it occurred, maybe in an open food plot or field, a buck might not move there during daylight hours for a while, but he’s not leaving his home range. That’s where he feels safest, so [...]

How High Should You Hang a Tree Stand For Deer Bowhunting ?

Hiking through the woods one day, I came upon an empty tree stand and had to chuckle. I could almost reach up and touch it! It was maybe 9 feet off the ground. Another day on a public area, I was walking a log road back to my truck when I heard a whistle. I looked round and round but didn’t see anybody. Finally, I heard, “Up here.” I craned my neck and looked some 35 feet up into an oak. The guy grinned down at me and whispered, “How it’s going?” Talk about extremes! At 9 or 10 feet off the ground, any deer that walks anywhere close is bound to see you. And a “skyscraper stand” 30 feet [...]

3 Summer Tips For Better Deer Hunting This Fall

1) While you’re out working your land with a tractor this summer, try this. Bush-hog a strip of grass or mow a lane through a thicket right up to one or two of your favorite tree stand locations near a field. Keep those lanes trimmed one more time in late August. Deer will find and use the paths. One day later this fall, a big 8-pointer might walk smack down the strip to your bow stand. The trimmed lanes are also great places to plant mini-plots of attractant clover and chicory just before hunting season. 2) Scour an old grown-up farm field or pasture for hidden fruit trees, like apple or persimmon, or thickets of blackberry. Open up the trees [...]

Why You Should Scout For Buck Rubs In The Spring

Most of the trees that bucks rubbed last October and November are still whitish scars on the trees, and easy to spot in the spring woods. Look especially close for “signpost” rubs--large, scarred trees that mark some section of a mature buck’s core living area. Missouri whitetail scientist Grant Woods says that while mature bucks blaze the rubs on thick trees during the lead up to the fall rut, many deer interact with them year-round. “Big rubs act as communal pheromone wicks and are located in areas with high deer traffic,” he says. Bucks and does can easily see the rubs and sometimes veer over for a sniff. Many signpost rubs are rubbed again and again by rutting bucks each [...]

Hanback note: Since some 900,000 people hunt deer in Pennsylvania each year (number of hunters is second only to Texas in the U.S.) the annual Pennsylvania harvest numbers are a big deal. Of the 376,810 deer killed during the 2021-22 season, the Pennsylvania Game Commission reports that 145,320 were bucks, and 231,490 were does. The total harvest was down about 13 percent compared to 2020-21, when hunters recorded the largest deer kill in 16 years (435,180 animals). Some highlights: • 22 percent of licensed hunters in Pennsylvania killed a buck last year. • 62 percent of the bucks were 2.5 years old or older; only 38% percent were 1.5 years old. That’s an almost complete reversal of how things were [...]
