You unconsciously but haphazardly lug a tree stand and steps on the way in to a hunting site, heavy metal clanking every step of the way. You lumber along and crack sticks. You bull through a patch of cover and jump as a deer boils out of there and runs off. Even a moderate amount of human intrusion this close to bow season can and will cause a mature buck to change his pattern. By the time you finally hang your set and start hunting in a few weeks, a big deer might have moved over to the next ridge to travel or bed. The Fix: With rope or bungees, batten down a stand, steps, tools and all your gear [...]

I suppose this should come as a surprise because these programs are popular, but then again the current administration is the most anti-gun ever.--MH From the Sportsmen's Alliance: Sportsmen across the U.S. were stunned to read reports in the media that the Biden Administration was interpreting language in a newly passed gun-control law to ban federal education funding for hunter safety/education classes held at schools along with funding for the popular National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP). According to reports, this decision will pull funding for such programs that are enjoyed by millions of students nationwide at thousands of schools. Not to be confused with hunter education programs provided by state fish and wildlife agencies through the Pittman-Robertson excise [...]

You won't go wrong by trying these 5 archery setups this fall. #1 Elevated Ridge Stand An elevated ridge that is situated 100 yards or so up from a field of corn, soybeans or alfalfa is one of my favorite spots for the pre-rut. Like most early-season setups, it is killer for the afternoons. But if access is good and the wind allows it, you might be able to sneak in and hunt the stand one morning too. If you have a flat of oak trees on your property that runs up a ridge from an ag field, jackpot. Does will come from back in the cover and move through in the afternoon on their way to the field. Some [...]

I’ll be bowhunting for a big buck in Alabama this season? Weather-wise, which days should be best? Try to plan your hunts around cool, clear days with a north wind. “Down here, big bucks move the best on cool, bluebird days,” says Jimmy Riley, a deer habitat expert and long-time guide in Mississippi. “We have lots of days when it’s warm and the wind blows out of the south. Deer don’t move as well then. But if you can catch a couple of crisp, clear days, you should spot some awesome buck movement.” What are pheromones? Pheromones are chemical substances in the urine and glandular secretions of deer. They serve as stimuli to other deer for behavioral responses. Many biologists [...]

After last season, did you some tree stands out in the woods? If so, keep these things in mind before you climb up this bow season. Paramount is to thoroughly inspect the straps, chains or cables that connect stand platforms and steps to trees . These connectors will weather and wear, and routine inspection and service is a must. With climbing/safety harness fully engaged, check all straps on ladder sections or stick steps as you ascend the tree. Retighten or replace straps as needed. When you top out at the platform, attach a Lifeline and leave this safety device attached all season. Inspect stand and connecters thoroughly. Replace worn straps or cables if noticeably worn. Check and tighten any loose [...]
