A Michigan hunter named Goose saw me shoot several bucks recently on TV with a Marlin Model 336 in .35 Rem. and he had to have one. He ordered his .35 lever more than a year ago, and has been waiting patiently for it since. My buddy John Havlick, owner of Frank’s Gun Shop in Amsterdam, New York, texted, “Last year was absolutely crazy for us, and 2021 is starting the same way.” John says lever guns are still hot sellers with deer hunters up in the Adirondacks, but he hasn’t been able to get his hands on any Marlins for a long time. That will change, but it’s going to take the better part of another year. After Ruger [...]

4 Ways To Get Rid Of Old Or Bad Ammunition

With the ammo shortage that will extend into to the end of 2021 and likely beyond, millions of shooters and hunters are having to dig deep in their basements and gun cabinets to come up with a few boxes of cartridges to use. Cartridges that might be 5, 10 or more years old. As long as old ammo is stored properly it will generally be good for many years. But sometimes old cartridges can corrode and should not be fired, but rather discarded. Or maybe you’re moving or simply cleaning out your hunting/shooting room, and have boxes and loose rounds of old ammunition that you don’t feel comfortable using. Never throw old ammunition out in the trash, or in [...]

3 Bucks With 3 20-Year-Old Bullets

I have shot a lot of game over the years with the .30-06---sheep, bears, elk, caribou, mule deer and too many whitetails to count. But I hadn’t hunted with the  venerable cartridge for at least 10 years. Recently I’d killed my bucks with rifles chambered for .270, .35-Rem., 7mm Mag and others. I am proud to announce that last November, CZ-USA came aboard as the exclusive firearms sponsor of BIG DEER TV, and they sent me a Model 557 Eclipse chambered for .30-06. Great, but what about ammo? I went to my gun shop and owner Steve laughed and said, “You want some ’06? Man, we haven’t had any of that for months. You won’t find a box within 500 [...]

Ammo Shortage: Federal, Remington Update January 2021

I have blogged multiple times about the incredible ammo shortage of 2020 and now running into 2021. You’ve felt it and so have I. In fact, for my deer hunting the last 3 months, I had to rummage my ammo stash and dig out a box of 20-year-old-plus Federal Premium .30-06 w/165-grain Trophy Bonded bullet. No complaints, I shot 5 bucks with 5 shots and the old ammo performed beautifully. Here’s an update on the ammunition situation from Federal and Remington, the 2 brands I have hunted with exclusively for the past 2 decades. In a recent story on the Outdoor Life website, Jason Vanderbrink, head man at Federal Premium, explains that before the pandemic hit last February/March, the previous [...]

One of the coolest bucks and stories of the year. From The Dallas Morning News: Virginia Luce’s 11-pointer isn’t the biggest buck reported from eastern Texas this season, but the story behind her Houston County whopper is arguably one of the most refreshing to come down the pike in quite a while. Virginia, 80, is a cancer survivor who recently retired after working 25 years as a registered nurse. She and her 83-year-old husband, Myrl, live and hunt on their 80-acre spread. “It’s a pretty good spot,” she said. “My husband and I have hunted and fished together for our entire married life — 63 years. “I usually kill a buck every year.” Physical limitations have forced a change in [...]
