November 2 update from our favorite hunting couple: Hey Mike, Zach and Ellie here with an update on our season. Here in central Illinois it’s about to get hot! Lots of big bucks checking scrapes. Ellie had a big 8 cruising yesterday bumping does, she passed him waiting for a bigger one lol. With this cold front this week I think it’s going to trigger them for sure. Here's a pic of one we're after. Way to Ellie waiting on a bigger buck, good luck guys! Let’s update the rut from across the country! Please comment below with the rut activity in your area or email me your rut info/photos at: mikehanback@yahoo.com

Nov. 2: Indiana Deer Rut Report

Great update this morning from our friend Dean Weimer.  Things are looking good here in Indiana right now. I got reports that the south side of my buddy's farm had 2 bucks fighting over a presumed hot doe Saturday a.m. by goose hunters that were out in the corn stubble on the farm. Then a buddy of mine who lives out in that same area saw a big mature "8 or 10 pointer" crossing into my buddy's land at 2 p.m. on Sunday. The buck was alone and didn't seem to be spooked. I knew I had to go check it out. Yesterday afternoon I went out and threw up a blind in the fencerow very close to the woodlot in [...]

BIG DEER Predicts Early Trickle Rut For 2021

For many years the late, great whitetail behaviorist and hunting expert Charles Alsheimer produced his annual Whitetail Calendar, with predictions on how whitetails would rut each fall based on environmental cues like the light intensity of the moon. According to Charlie, in a fall like 2021 when you have a full moon in mid-October and another one in mid-November, the pump is primed for a classic “trickle rut.” “Some does will cue off the October full moon (and come into estrous) while others will cue off the November full moon,” Alsheimer wrote in Deer and Deer Hunting magazine.  “So late October you get a pop in the rut, and then Thanksgiving week you get another pop in the rut, and [...]

How To Judge Bucks After The Rut

Lindsay Thomas of the National Deer Association is an expert at sizing up bucks on the hoof. I asked him to give us some tips for the December post-rut. “Judging the age of a buck after the rut can be difficult for the same reason it's tough prior to the rut,” he says, “because not all of the important aging characteristics are in place. “We don't recommend estimating the age of bucks in summer because all of them have skinny necks. Until testosterone rises as the rut approaches, you don't get the neck swelling that helps distinguish older bucks from younger bucks. “Over the course of the rut, we know bucks can lose a lot of weight from the exertion [...]

Hunt Late Deer Rut on Public Land

Here’s an opportunity for you public-land hunters if you’ve not shot your buck yet. In a study awhile back, scientists at Mississippi State’s vaunted deer research program found that in early to mid-December (or into mid-January in Southern areas with a peak rut in December) you  can often have good rutting action on a typical WMA or national forest where does far outnumber bucks. The biologists said that on uncultivated land where the buck:doe ratio is out of whack, there aren’t enough bucks to breed most of the adult does during the peak November estrus cycle. Some 28 days later the “missed” does come back into heat. But since there aren’t as many hot-to-trot does now, the estrus ones draw [...]
