Hunters Locked Out Of Federal Lands

Right now, with deer seasons heating up across the country, the federal government has issued directives to close accessible public lands while the government is shut down. At stake are millions of acres of public land administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, National Park Service and the like. According to the United States Sportsmen’s Alliance (USSA) these agencies are being told to close access to their lands because of the standoff taking place over funding the federal government. “These lands are generally accessible to the public without special entrance fees, passage through gates, or access via controlled roads or waterways,” said Nick Pinizzotto, USSA President and CEO.  “Not only are these closures unnecessary, they run contrary to law.  [...]

EHD Strikes Montana Deer…Again

2020-06-10T09:23:21-04:00September 26th, 2013|BigDeer, Deer Science, Hunting News|4 Comments

Montana wildlife officials say that more than 100 whitetail deer have been reported dead in the west Missoula Valley, in and along the Clark Fork River. “People are seeing healthy looking deer fall over dead,” said Vickie Edwards, FWP wildlife biologist in Missoula. FWP personnel have collected blood and tissue samples from a number of affected deer and are awaiting the results of laboratory analysis, but most certainly the cause of the death is epizootic hemorrhagic disease (EHD). Montana hunter Toby Bridges posted this picture from the area: “Along maybe 10 miles of river, there has been a near 100 percent loss of whitetails. If you cruise along that stretch with windows down, you will smell the death all along [...]

New Moon and Deer Movement

Did the moon phase play a major role in Danny’s shooting of the big 10-pointer “Spike” in Maryland last Friday? Blogging about the hunt, Danny wrote: Maryland bow opener was Sept 6–the morning after the new moon. The wind direction was supposed to be out of the NNE.  I looked back through all the cam pictures I had, and it just so happened the last time we had a NNE wind was the morning after the new moon in August. Spike was at the location I call The Puddle on that very morning. Danny hunted “The Puddle” on September 6 and saw some 18 deer moving at first light, including a bachelor herd of 12-15 bucks. He shot the 164-inch 10-pointer [...]

Man Struck with Rage Broadhead

2020-06-10T09:23:22-04:00September 5th, 2013|BigDeer, Bowhunting, Hunting News|3 Comments

I shoot Rage and I have seen the damage it does to a deer, so I shuddered when I read this: TJ Cartwright, 23, was struck with an arrow in the cheek while hunting deer with three companions… Cartwright was taking video ahead of the hunting party when a buck began making its way across the field. As the hunters began positioning themselves to take a shot, Cartwright inadvertently ended up between the archer and the target. As the shooter, whose bow was drawn, attempted to throw the shot away, the arrow accidentally released. Cartwright stood and was hit. The broadhead lodged near TJ’s carotid artery. Surgeons worked for more than eight hours to remove it. "Even though he is [...]

Confirmed: Gray Wolf Shot in Kentucky

2020-06-10T09:23:22-04:00August 15th, 2013|BigDeer, Hunting News, Predator Hunting|Comments Off on Confirmed: Gray Wolf Shot in Kentucky

Back in March, James Troyer shot an animal while predator hunting on his family's farm in Hart County. He walked up and saw it was much larger than a coyote. "I was like - wow - that thing was big!" he recalled. "It looked like a wolf, but who is going to believe I shot a wolf?" Because a free-ranging wolf has not been seen in Kentucky for more than 100 years, biologists were skeptical. Troyer convinced Kevin Raymond, a biologist for the Kentucky Dept. of Fish and Wildlife Resources, to look at the animal. Once Raymond saw the animal was twice the size of a coyote he contacted furbearer biologist Laura Patton, who submitted samples to federal officials for DNA testing. [...]
