Shed Hunt Archives: Well-Pit Buck

I was looking back through the BIG DEER archives, and ran across this most unusual shed hunt we have ever posted. Man, you never know what you’re going to find in the woods: About 20 years ago, some Missouri guys had been shed hunting all day to no avail when they decided to check a 2-acre thicket around an old homestead. Walking around the crumbled stone foundation, one fellow found an old well. He kneeled, looked down and saw the remains of this buck down in it. The hunters first thought that maybe someone had poached the deer the previous season and stuffed it in there. But when they pulled the deer out, there were no bullet holes in the body [...]

Drew sent this picture of a tremendous buck he had been hunting for the past 3 years. “A truly remarkable animal that we called Moose,” Drew wrote. “Unfortunately, Moose died due to (another) bowhunter’s mistake (not mine) and we recovered his body and antlers this spring. My story is too long to put into an email tonight, but if you would like more I would be grateful and happy to share it with you.” Drew will be sending the full and exclusive story soon. He also sent a trail-cam video of Moose on the hoof, and it is amazing footage. I’ll wait and post that with the story. Drew says the rack was scored at 252 1/8" and that was after squirrels had [...]

Illinois: Big 10 Sheds w/Drop Tine

2020-06-10T09:23:02-04:00April 18th, 2014|BigDeer, Shed Hunting|5 Comments

Archie over at Midwest Buck Quest turned us on to these big sheds that were found recently in Illinois. Split brow and a nice drop! Hope this hunter, who wishes to remain anonymous, gets a crack at him this fall. This is a good reminder to get out there this weekend and do one more round of shed hunting before the woods green up. Find a nice set like this (or one antler) and you know the buck that dropped them survived last hunting season. If he does not get hit by a car or otherwise perish this summer, he will live in the general vicinity of where he cast his sheds (typically within 500 acres or so). Teaser: You [...]

Giant Illinois Shed Antler!

From the Midwest Buck Quest Facebook Page: 109 inches, found in Southern Illinois. Wow!!! The 2 extra beams are obviously cool and unique, but check out the antler base. Big around as a pop can! I’ve seen mass like that come out of southern Illinois before.

Kansas Deer Sheds!

2020-06-10T09:23:03-04:00March 18th, 2014|BigDeer, Shed Hunting|4 Comments

Tony and his dog recently found this truck full of sheds on a ranch I hope to hunt this fall (got to pull a buck tag first though, I did not draw in 2013).  The 5-point antlers on the bed in the middle are off the biggest deer, but if I could choose one buck to get a shot at in December it would be the one who lost that thick shed w/the split brow and G-2 on the right. Love those massive Kansas character racks. He is and old deer and gonna be even older this year. I would shoot the middle buck too, though, wouldn’t you? I sure hope I draw a tag.
