Go Mountain Hunting While You Can

A fellow named Joe heard me say on TV the other day that I used to do a lot of mountain hunting years ago, before I switched over to basically 100% deer. I made the switch because to scratch out a living in the outdoor blogging and television business, you’d better hunt deer, and you’d better write and speak like you know what you are talking about. “I’m over the hill now, with bad knees and a stiff back, but those hunts I took for sheep and elk back in my day are forever etched in my memory,” Joe said in an email. “In the long run of a hunting career it’s the adventure and the chase, not the prize, [...]

A report released last year by the Council to Advance Hunting and the Shooting Sports documented a 4.9% increase in hunting license sales from 2019 to 2020. One of the few bright spots of COVID is that it produced a rekindled interest in deer hunting across the United States as people sought to get outside, do something new and try to harvest their own food. To continue monitoring the pandemic’s impact on hunting, the Council revisited this study in early 2022 to identify ongoing changes and emerging trends in hunters’ rates of license purchases. Working with survey experts Southwick Associates, the Council collected monthly resident and nonresident hunting license sales data from 46 state wildlife agencies to compare 2021 [...]

With all the crime and tragedy swirling in America right now--what causes young males do such violent and unspeakable things?--the results of this 2019 study are interesting and relevant.—M.H. Paul Niekamp, a Ball State economics professor, analyzed daily crime data with statistics from deer hunting seasons spanning 20 years and 21 states for his study, “Good Bang for the Buck: Effects of Rural Gun Use on Crime.” “The results of this paper provide strong evidence that enormous increases in recreational long gun prevalence are not associated with any increase in violent crime,” he said. “In the least populous areas, where long gun prevalence increased 530%, estimates suggest that male violent crime actually decreased.” Niekamp’s study provides the first estimates of [...]

I’ve been hunting whitetails for more than 40 years, and nothing a mature buck does surprises me anymore. Nothing. I learn new things every season, and so should you. Here are 5 takeaways from the 2021 season. Stop Complaining and Hunt The Heat During early bow and black-powder seasons in Virginia last October, temperatures hovered in the 70s and even 80s some days. In mid-November, I traveled to north-central Saskatchewan, where average temps should be in the teens and low 20s that time of year. Afternoons in the bush were a balmy 50 degrees. One sunny day in Oklahoma in late November, it was a record 88 degrees! Long story short, I hunted hard for 2 months in all these [...]
