What Is Important To You: Killing A Deer Or Hunting It?

Mike: I saw this quote in your BIO and it intrigued me: “I am finally at that point in life where the killing of an animal has become secondary to the challenge of hunting it.” Could you please explain?—Paul Paul, thanks for the question. When I was in my teens and 20s, it was it was all about shooting as many deer, squirrels, turkeys, whatever as I could. Stack ‘em up. Legal numbers of course. One thing I have never done, even as a kid, is broken a game law. I think the “if brown it’s down” mentality, that thirst and hunger to kill deer, is natural for young hunters. And within reason I think it’s important. To keep a [...]

7 Ways To Identify Poison Ivy

Expect to see gonzo poison ivy in the coming years, thicker, leafier and itchier than ever. A study from Duke and Harvard found that as carbon dioxide levels rise in the atmosphere, the noxious vine grows bigger and faster and is stoked with high-octane urushiol, the chemical that causes your skin to redden, bubble up and inch like hell. Is this another conspiracy theory of the greenie-weenies? Is global warming/climate change even a thing? Like most fair-minded people I don’t really know. But we’re talking about poison ivy here, and I do know I’m seeing more clumps of the nasty stuff growing up trees and overtaking thickets in some areas. It's more important than ever for hunters and all outdoors [...]

Gun Case Laws For Hunters

The section entitled “Traveling Requirements for Firearms” in QDMA’s 2020 Whitetail Report caught my attention. Having hunted deer and other animals in 40 states over the years, I know first-hand that “case laws” vary from state to state, and even county to county. This can be confusing, and in a worst-case scenario can get you in one hell of a jam if you don’t know and follow the laws. 7 states* require rifles/shotguns/muzzleloaders to be cased (either hard or soft case) in a vehicle at all times, whether you hunting near home for the day, or driving through one state to get to another. Those states are: Louisiana Massachusetts New Jersey Illinois Iowa Michigan Minnesota Another 5 states require guns [...]

When this pandemic resides and the stay-at-home orders are finally relaxed, we all look forward to 2 things: getting back to work, and going deer hunting this fall. In the wake of COVID-19, having seen and endured great disruptions to our supply chains and food supply, and facing the reality that we could be locked down again in the future, I believe that more Americans than ever will hunt whitetails come October and November. Most will hunt within 30 miles of their homes, hoping to shoot one or more deer (up to the legal limit) for the freezer. Whether you are a seasoned veteran or a newbie, you should strive to hunt your best this season, not only for the [...]

Saw this from one of our followers, Scott, on the @bigdeertv Instagram: I have had a lot of people ask for build plans for this bench. I posted the website. The bench is made with pressure treated wood and cost me $107 dollars to make. Plans give cut measurements and detailed directions for build. Enjoy. I know that many of you would like to build one of these on your land (if you have a safe spot for a rifle range) or out on your deer lease, so I researched it further. I went to the blog for the build and was impressed. First, they give you a list of tools you’ll need: circular saw, drill, bits, etc. Then, they [...]
