If you want to kill a big, gnarly whitetail in a couple of months, and who doesn't, do the legwork now. It’s not hard. Put in a little time and effort this summer, and your odds of success shoot way up. Find The Deer Food Take a day and drive out to your best hunting spot. Spray down with chigger/tick repellent and hike around the green woods, get a little exercise and zero in corn, soybean or alfalfa fields a farmer planted in the spring. Or didn’t plant, you need to know the location of fallow fields and work them into your plan. If you hunt 80 to 200 acres or so of all timber, roam around and check the [...]

I knew Indiana produced some giant whitetails every season. But when I read that the Hoosier State was Number 1 for Boone and Crockett racks in 2019 and 2020 (2021 stats not out yet) I had to go out there and ride around and talk to guys about the giant deer they’ve shot in recent years. That’s where he feels safest, so [...]

A fellow named Joe heard me say on TV the other day that I used to do a lot of mountain hunting years ago, before I switched over to basically 100% deer. I made the switch because to scratch out a living in the outdoor blogging and television business, you’d better hunt deer, and you’d better write and speak like you know what you are talking about. “I’m over the hill now, with bad knees and a stiff back, but those hunts I took for sheep and elk back in my day are forever etched in my memory,” Joe said in an email. “In the long run of a hunting career it’s the adventure and the chase, not the prize, [...]
