After last season, did you some tree stands out in the woods? If so, keep these things in mind before you climb up this bow season. Paramount is to thoroughly inspect the straps, chains or cables that connect stand platforms and steps to trees . These connectors will weather and wear, and routine inspection and service is a must. With climbing/safety harness fully engaged, check all straps on ladder sections or stick steps as you ascend the tree. Retighten or replace straps as needed. When you top out at the platform, attach a Lifeline and leave this safety device attached all season. Inspect stand and connecters thoroughly. Replace worn straps or cables if noticeably worn. I run several trail cameras year-round, but the July 4 holiday is when I start my buck recon in earnest for the new season. Velvet antlers are up and growing full bore. When you get an image of a buck with shooter potential, you’ll know it and can start tracking his movements for the next few months. Here are 3 great spots to set your cameras. Food Plot Funnels Next week on one property, we’ll set 2 cameras on 2 small clover plots hidden back in the woods. We’ll set 3 more cams on larger plots, but not aimed out into the clover. Rather, we’ll place these cams 20 to 30 yards back in the green thickets that rim the [...]

The full Buck Moon rose this morning, July 3, and reached peak illumination at 7:39 AM Eastern Time. It will hang near full in the sky for a couple more days, so look for it as you watch fireworks tomorrow night. This July Buck Moon is a Supermoon, which appears in the sky to be a bit bigger than a normal full moon, though a Supermoon is hard to distinguish with the naked eye. This Buck Moon is the first of 4 Supermoons in 2023. The next Supermoons will rise on August 1, August 30 and September 18. The Algonquin Indian tribes of the northeastern United States were the first to call the full moon each July the Buck Moon because [...]

For decades Pennsylvania hunters had to mail pre-stamped envelopes to county treasurers to apply for their antlerless deer licenses, but that arcane system is finally over. Thanks to a new 2023 law, resident and out-of-state hunters can now purchase “doe tags” from all locations and stores that sell hunting licenses as well as online.   The first batch of antlerless licenses for the 2023-24 season went on sale this morning, June 26, and hunters are encouraged to get theirs early. Resident antlerless licenses cost $6.97 and nonresidents pay $26.97.

By now you’ve probably seen the video of a whitetail doe eating and inhaling lengthwise a 2-foot-long snake. The video, taken by Trey Reinhart with his phone while driving along a road in Texas, has gone viral on Twitter with more than 18 million views. Wait, aren’t deer herbivore? Plant-eaters? Yes, and while it’s rare, a deer will sometimes eat animals or animal matter that it runs across. Most documented cases of carnivorous meals have been deer eating the eggs from a bird’s ground nest. Deer have also been know to eat tiny songbird chicks. A few years back, a photo of a deer standing in a creek with a fish in its mouth went viral. I read where some [...]
