Mike: Over the past couple years I only got one or two photos of this buck. Last year, 2020, I got 4. The buck made his home in a pine and sage grass cutover that joined a small strip of hardwoods in Marion County Alabama. I hunted him hard during bow season, and passed on smaller bucks waiting for him. The rut here doesn’t start till early January and I knew I had to get him before it kicked off. The day after Thanksgiving I climbed at the edge of the cut about a quarter-mile west of where I got the photos of the deer. Hadn’t been seeing any deer movement for a couple weeks close to my camera, so [...]

BIG DEER Hunting Predictions for 2021

As I predicted 9 months ago, the pandemic led to a notable increase (roughly 10% across all the states) in new and reactivated hunters for the fall 2020 seasons. People had been cooped up for months, and what better way to get out of the house and social distance without wearing a mask, unless it is a camo face covering. As more people get vaccinated and COVID begins to go away (we hope!) later in 2021 and into 22, will these new hunters still shoot and hunt next fall and into the future? I predict some fall off, but a good percentage of the new hunters will keep on doing it. They are more knowledgeable and confident now, have better [...]

Indiana: Ivory Buck Gross Scores 225 6/8!

Today's great guest blog from Randy Hunter--his hunt for the biggest buck he's ever seen in 40 years of deer hunting.  December 16, 2020. I woke up to 2 to 3 inches of snow that had fallen during the night. I’d been waiting for the right wind to hunt a special fence row. This northeast wind was just what I needed.  I don’t hunt the fence row in the morning because it’s too hard to slip in without busting deer.  I decided to hunt there that afternoon. This fence row is adjacent to an eight-acre woodlot separated by a small cornfield.  I had hunted this spot a couple of times earlier in the season and had seen does and young [...]

Merry Christmas From BIG DEER

Several years ago, South Dakota hunter Kelly Kirsch told me he’d come up with an idea for his shed collection, and his antler tree blew me away. Ever since it’s been the official Christmas tree of BIG DEER! Thanks to all of you for making 2020 a great traffic year for BIG DEER. I truly appreciate your support, and look forward to 2021…hopefully the world will return to some semblance of normalcy. And thanks for watching BIG DEER TV on the Sportsman Channel. Hard to believe, but we’re filming Season 10 right now, with new episodes coming next summer. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. God bless you and your family. If you’re still after a buck, hunt hard, stay [...]

Best Tactics for the Second Deer Rut

At first I figured some guy on the next ridge had spooked the jittery doe that dashed past my stand. But then I had a premonition: Was something more happening here? I readied my .270, just as the 9-pointer prowled forth, grunting with his nose to the ground. Easy shot. That would have been your classic rut hunt, except for one thing. I killed that gnarly buck on a cold day in late December, a good month after the breeding season had peaked in Virginia. Understanding the Second Rut Many hunters think the rut is confined to 2 or 3 weeks in mid-November, but it’s not. There is more “trickle breeding” going on into December than you might imagine. Bucks [...]
