Special thanks to South Dakota hunter Kelly Kirsch for this awesome picture. Several years ago Kelly told me he’d come up with an idea for his shed collection, and his antler tree blew me away. Ever since it’s been the official Christmas tree of BIG DEER! Thanks to all you bloggers for making 2017 a great traffic year for BIG DEER. I truly appreciate your support, and look forward to 2018 (we’re working on some cool new stuff). And thanks for watching BIG DEER TV on the Sportsman Channel. We’re wrapping up filming of Season 7, with new episodes coming next summer. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. God bless you and your family…if you’re still hunting a buck, good [...]

North Carolina: 8-Year-Old Warrior Buck

From our good friend Zane Keen: Mike: Thought I'd drop a line and say hello. I retired from the Army last year after 28 years of service. Still living here near Ft. Bragg, NC.  Last few years I haven't been able to get into the woods much, but I've been able to hunt a few times this season and have a cool story for you.  I was lucky enough to harvest one of the oldest deer the Ft. Bragg biologists can remember recording. They aged him at 8 1/2 years old. His rack was in significant decline: 19-inch inside spread with only 3 score-able points. His back molars were completely ground to the gums, and he had no lower teeth. His ears were that of a [...]

Texas: Hill Country Stag Buck

2020-06-10T09:16:08-04:00December 18th, 2017|Big Deer Stories, BigDeer, Deer Hunting|Comments Off on Texas: Hill Country Stag Buck

Hello Mike: On opening weekend in San Saba County I shot the weirdest buck I have ever seen in the woods. To be honest, I didn’t realize what I had until I walked up to him after the 75 yard shot. I found your article on stag bucks and was wondering if you have an idea how rare this type of buck is: 1 in a 1000 maybe? I have talked to lots of long-time hunters and none of them have seen one like him.—Thanks, Jonathan Sportel Jon, there’s no way to put odds on it, but a stag--either one born that way or a buck that injured his testicles sometime in life—is extremely rare, perhaps rarer than 1 in 1,000. 188-Inch Maine Mountain Buck

2020-06-10T09:16:08-04:00December 13th, 2017|Big Deer Stories, BigDeer, Deer Hunting|5 Comments

Gene Doughty sent this: I shot this buck up on a mountain in Maine, he was chasing two does and there was another big buck in his tracks but with a smaller rack. The rut was in full gear that day. Green score on the rack is 188 inches and the deer weighed 213 lbs. Nice dark rack.--Ty Way to go man, Maine is a great place to hunt but a tough place to kill a 180-inch buck. To my mind Gene's buck is one of the top trophies of 2017!

Hunt On The Ground For Winter Deer

2020-06-10T09:16:08-04:00December 10th, 2017|Big Deer Stories, Big Deer TV, BigDeer, Deer Hunting|1 Comment

I’ve frozen my fanny off way too many days in a tree stand over the years.  Nowadays when I’m desperately trying to fill my last tag in December or January I generally hunt on the ground. It’s warmer down there, and if you set up right, you have better hiding cover. No. 1 thing to remember: Do not set up where deer will walk straight at you through the bare winter woods. If an old doe catches you move or simply sees your blind as some strange blob that wasn’t there yesterday or last month, she’ll either spook r back off and skirt you. Any buck behind her will probably do the same. Instead, set up where a buck will [...]
