I was hunting up in Saskatchewan several years ago when a local fellow asked if I would like to go see one of the top whitetail racks in the history of hunting. “Hell yeah!” I hollered and off we went to the small town of Debden. I remember standing in Tiggy’s kitchen and holding that amazing rack, shocked that is was just a skull mount! Tiggy, a truck driver by trade and a nice, unassuming guy, gave me the quick version of the story. He had finished his run early one October day in 2003, so he decided to go bowhunting for a while, hoping to shoot a doe for the freezer. He wasn’t in the stand long when this [...]

Here’s an 8-step plan for staying cool and collected, and making all the right moves when a big buck is close. Set up smartly. Play it smart before you lay eyes on a big deer. Do you normally hang a tree stand 18 to 20 feet high? Well, move it on up to 22 feet when archery hunting. A little extra elevation lets you get away with a lot more movement (which we will discuss later) when a buck approaches. Also, if you shoot right-handed, angle a perch on a tree so that your left shoulder points toward a spot where you expect to see deer (vice versa for southpaws). If a buck shows there, you can stand up and [...]

The Tyler County Sheriff's Office got a 911 call from a bowhunter stuck upside down and 18 feet up in a climbing tree stand. "He was high off the ground, with his right foot wedged in the framework of his climbing stand," said responding deputy Deputy LeBlanc. First responders were able to maneuver a truck below the hanging hunter, climb up, unlock his foot and rescue the unnamed man, who miraculously did not need treatment. “My advice to hunters is that this is a prime example of the need to use a safety harness,” said the deputy. “He's lucky his phone didn't (fall and) hit the ground. He'd been hanging long enough that his fluids and blood were rushing to [...]

14 Tree Stand Hacks For Deer Hunters

Look for trees for stands at midday, when most does and bucks are bedded. A quiet, rainy day is perfect. Scout with the wind in your face or quartering over your shoulder to keep from spooking bedded deer. At a new stand site, be quiet. Don’t throw or bang steel or aluminum stands and steps around. If you’re hanging with a buddy, don’t talk or laugh loudly. Set up and sneak out of an area without alerting deer that might be bedded or walking nearby. Everybody looks for big, straight trees, but a hardwood that leans slightly back and toward your downwind side can be great. When you hang your stand on the ‘up’ or front side of the tree, [...]
