The hunter who sent the video of the drop-tine buck pulled his cards and here’s what he got. Huge drop w/mass, dream buck! And look who is traveling in the bachelor group with the drop, another giant, this one w/incredible tine length (pictures 2 and 3 below). And our good friends Zac and Ellie had been watching a couple bucks for the past 2 weeks. One day when the wind was right they snuck in, set up a camera and captured the great picture below. Fantastic work guys. From these cam images and others I'm seeing, I now officially proclaim that 2014 will be a big rack year, much better than last year. Send me your trail camera images to get us even more fired up, [...]

Trail Cam: Two Big Virginia Bucks!

2020-06-10T09:22:47-04:00August 6th, 2014|BigDeer, Deer Management|3 Comments

This image was posted on the Virginia Whitetails Facebook about 20 hours ago: Doug sent this trail cam pic of some great Cumberland County bucks. Love that high-tower rack, and the buck on the right is no slouch either. It was a good rack year here in the Old Dominion in 2013, and if these bucks are an indication, gonna be great again this year.

Mexico Whitetail Hunting 2014

Awhile back I posted on my recent deer hunting trip to Mexico. I hunted out in Sonora—mule deer and Coues country—and while I was anxious with the travel (especially with a rifle and ammo) I made it okay and enjoyed hunting in the desert for a week. With all you see and read about the crime and chaos on our southern border, the major points of that post were: Is it safe to hunt in Mexico in 2014? Would I recommend you hunt there? I blogged: Do not even think about crossing the border from El Paso east to Laredo, Texas, where the whitetail hunting was once so fine… Just across the Rio Grande from Laredo, American hunters (years ago [...]

Nebraska: Legendary Del Austin Buck

2020-06-10T09:22:48-04:00August 5th, 2014|Big Deer Stories, BigDeer|4 Comments

We’re editing a TV show on hunting in Nebraska, and I ran across this amazing buck and story in my research: As the story goes, a bowhunter by name of Al Dawson was out in the woods near the Platte River one day in 1958 when he spotted the biggest buck he’d ever seen. Al recalled to a magazine: "…heavy, scraggly points, long and short, growing from the main beams in all directions… two long prongs curving out and down on either side of his head, between eye and ear…extended below his jaws, giving him an odd, lop-eared appearance." Al hunted the giant hard for the next 4 years. He saw him a few more times, and other hunters in the area did too. [...]

Trail Cam: Bent Beam Buck

2020-06-10T09:22:48-04:00August 1st, 2014|BigDeer, Deer Management|4 Comments

One of our bloggers sent this image from somewhere in Wisconsin. This buck would be a cool sight to see coming through the woods in a few weeks when bow season opens. How do you think he bent that beam? From what I'm seeing it's setting up to be a good rack year, much better than last. And I have not heard of any massive EHD outbreaks as of yet, though now is the time when we really need to be on the lookout for that. Fingers crossed, should be a good fall! Are you getting ready?
